<p>Interpreter</p> <p>Reports to: Exceptional Children's Program Director, Audiologist</p> <p>Purpose: To provide consistent monitoring, assistance, interpretation, and translation to hearing impaired students.</p> <p>Qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>High School diploma and extensive knowledge and training in sign language </li><li>48 Semester hours, Assocaites degree or must take and pass Work Keys Test. </li></ul> <p>Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:</p> <ul> <li>The ability to effectively transliterate and interpret at a rate commensurate with conversational and lecture speech. </li></ul> <p>Key Duties and Responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li>Direct Service </li><li>Transliterate and interpret for hearing impaired students in the classroom as specified by the individualized education program (IEP). </li><li>When necessary, the interpreter should not only transliterate in signed English but take the responsibility of interpreting what the teacher and others have said on a language level understood by the student. </li><li>Interpreters should become familiar with the vocabulary, concepts, and sign/cues prior to class presentations. </li><li>Maintain an impartial attitude during all interpreting situations by avoiding any interjection of personalized comments or advice to the hearing-impaired student. The interpreter should not attempt to answer questions asked by the student but should insist that the student ask questions directly to the teacher. The interpreter should not assume the role of the classroom teacher. </li><li>Advise the hearing-impaired student about the correct use of an interpreter. </li><li>Coordination/Liaison </li><li>Serve as a team member working with the classroom teacher and the teacher of the hearing impaired, by reviewing lessons to ensure accurate interpretation of material. </li><li>Attend IEP meetings if clarification is needed about the communication needs and skills of the hearing-impaired student. </li><li>Assist in promoting positive feelings between hearing impaired students, school personnel and other students by establishing and maintaining cooperative relationships. </li><li>Professional Practices and Development </li><li>Adheres to professional practice standards in service delivery and conversational and mannerisms. </li><li>Seeks to improve professional knowledge and skills. </li><li>Liaison </li><li>Maintain a continuous dialogue with parents, teachers, and school administrators, as necessary. </li><li>Serve as a member of the school-based educational team, if needed. </li></ul> <p>Term of Employment: 10 Months</p>
