<p>General Description</p> <p>Interested in learning more about a career in Public Works with the City of Madison while getting paid? Apply to participate in the Madison Infrastructure Training - Engineering (MI-TE) Program where you will be provided classroom and hands-on training in sanitary and storm sewer cleaning, Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) inspection, utility casting adjustments and replacements, storm inlet repairs, concrete flatwork, and asphalt patching. You'll learn how the City's infrastructure is constructed and maintained, related equipment operation, and construction safety. You will also receive classroom and behind the wheel training to get your Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Program participants who successfully complete the program will be considered for permanent entry level positions in the Engineering, Parks, and Streets Divisions.</p> <p>Current recruitment will fill multiple vacancies.</p> <p>Hours: 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday, approximately April through November</p> <p>This is a 6-8 month training program intended to prepare participants for a career in Public Works with the City of Madison. Participants will be provided classroom and hands-on training in concrete, asphalt and utility casting construction. Start applying what you've learned in the classroom and work to set up and maintain a safe job site, review utility markings, and keep yourself safe while working around traffic and heavy equipment on a construction site.</p> </li><li> <p>Equipment Safety and Operation - Gain hands-on experience in the safe operation of equipment used to perform work. Examples of skills you will learn:</p> </li><li> <p>Back up safely, identify and avoid blind spots, and use a spotter</p> </li><li> <p>Use a skid steer to load materials into a dump truck and break out and remove existing concrete or asphalt</p> </li><li> <p>Transport and dump materials</p> </li><li> <p>Compact asphalt with a ride-on roller</p> </li><li> <p>Compact base materials with a plate compactor</p> </li><li> <p>Cut concrete with a partner saw</p> </li><li> <p>Safely load and secure equipment on a trailer</p> </li><li> <p>Concrete construction - Work on a crew to learn how to replace and install sidewalks, driveway aprons, curb and gutter, and bus stops. You'll gain hands-on experience on laying out a job, breaking out and removing existing concrete, excavating and backfilling to necessary grade, base compaction, forming and pouring concrete, finishing, and applying curing compound.</p> </li><li> <p>Asphalt construction - Work on a crew to learn how to install asphalt pavement patches. In addition to what you've already learned you'll gain hands-on experience on placing and compacting asphalt.</p> </li><li> <p>Utility Casting Replacements - Finally you'll learn about the different types of utility castings and how we use Mr. Manhole to cut around the casting and surrounding pavement out all at once. You'll then learn how to set and seal a new casting and patch the surrounding area.</p> </li><li> <p>Sewer Cleaning - Work on a actor crew using high-tech equipment to clean and maintain the City's sanitary and storm sewer to prevent back-ups, overflows, and flooding.</p> </li><li> <p>CCTV Inspection - Assist on one of our CCTV inspection crews using high-tech robotic equipment to inspect internal pipe conditions.</p> </li></ul> <p>Classroom Training Activities</p> <ul> <li>Safety - Get your OSHA 10 and First Aid and CPR certifications. Learn about silica respiratory safety, bloodborne pathogens, Digger's Hotline and damage prevention, work zone safety, traffic control, and safe driving and equipment operation. </li><li>Construction Basics - Learn how to read and understand plans and specifications. Learn about the materials, testing, and methods used to perform concrete and asphalt work and utility casting replacements. Learn how to perform this work while protecting existing trees from damage and erosion control to protect our rivers and lakes. </li><li>Public Works Math - Learn how to calculate how much concrete or asphalt needs to be ordered for a job. </li><li>Human Skills Development Series - Attend a multi-session program designed to equip adult learners with essential workplace and interpersonal skills as they prepare for careers in Public Works maintenance, construction, and other workforce roles. These sessions will offer space for reflection, hands-on practice, and peer support. It acknowledges the realities many learners face-balancing work, family, and digital literacy challenges-by delivering practical, culturally aware instruction that builds confidence and readiness. Reflection, role play, and culturally relevant language make the program both personal and powerful for learners from diverse backgrounds. </li></ul> <p>CDL Training Activities</p> <ul> <li>Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) Theory Instruction - All federally mandated ELDT knowledge modules, completed through an online platform for ease of access and flexibility. </li><li>Behind the wheel skills training - 120-160 hours of pre-trip, backing, and road driving practice using (Latino Academy of Workforce Development) LAWD's training fleet. </li></ul> <p>Career Exploration</p> <ul> <li>You'll be provided the opportunity to learn about different careers in Public Works. This will include job shadowing opportunities to learn about careers in Engineering, Parks, Streets, Traffic Engineering, and Water. </li><li>Perform other related tasks as may be assigned. </li></ul> <p>Minimum Qualifications</p> <p>All applicants will be considered for these positions.
