<p>Job Title: Shelter Manager - Low-Barrier Overnight Homeless Shelter</p> <p>Location: LBS 96 3rd Ave W</p> <p>Reports To: Behavioral Health Administrator</p> <p>Job Type: Full-Time</p> <p>Schedule: Primarily evening and overnight hours; including some weekends and holidays</p> <p>Position Summary:</p> <p>We are seeking a dedicated, experienced, and compassionate Shelter Manager to oversee the nightly operations of our low-barrier overnight homeless shelter. This role is essential to ensuring a safe, welcoming, and trauma-informed environment for individuals experiencing homelessness-many of whom live with additional challenges like mental illness, substance use disorders, and complex trauma.</p> <p>The Shelter Manager is responsible for overseeing and facilitating nightly shelter operations, managing crisis response, coordinating on-site services, ensuring adherence to low-barrier and harm-reduction principles, and fostering a culture of dignity, respect, and inclusion for all guests.</p> <p>Applicants with a nursing or clinical mental health background are encouraged to apply. However, a clinical background is not required with adequate relevant experience.</p> <p>Key Responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li>Supervise and support shelter operations during overnight hours, including oversight of shelter staff and volunteers. </li><li>Manage shift schedules, delegate tasks, and ensure continuity of operations. </li><li>Oversee shelter admissions and ensure equitable, non-judgmental access to services. </li><li>Promote a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment, guided by harm reduction and trauma-informed practices. </li><li>Respond to and manage behavioral or medical crises, determine appropriate interventions, and coordinate with emergency services or mobile crisis teams. </li><li>Build and maintain respectful relationships with guests while enforcing shelter policies and de-escalating conflicts with consistency and empathy. </li><li>Maintain shelter cleanliness, safety, and order through regular walkthroughs and staff direction. </li><li>Address guest concerns or complaints promptly and professionally. </li><li>Inventory guest needs and coordinate with Administration to meet those needs; may involve collection of supplies and organization of collection efforts. </li><li>Coordinate with case management, outreach, and healthcare teams for continuity of care. </li><li>Complete and review shift reports, incident documentation, and guest service logs on a daily basis. </li><li>Participate in hiring, training, scheduling, and performance evaluations for shelter staff. </li><li>Develop collaborative relationship with stakeholders, including neighbors, community members, and partnering organizations. </li><li>Ensure compliance with organizational policies and procedures. </li></ul> <p>If Clinical:</p> <ul> <li>Conduct brief assessments and triage for guests presenting with medical, mental health, or substance use concerns. </li><li>Administer basic first aid and wound care (if licensed and within scope). </li><li>Provide clinical support to other staff where appropriate. </li><li>Respond to behavioral or medical crises, determine appropriate interventions, and coordinate with EMS or mobile crisis units. </li><li>Collaborate with on-site or external providers for medical, psychiatric, or case management follow-up. </li><li>Support harm reduction initiatives including naloxone distribution, overdose response, and substance use education. </li><li>Document clinical interventions and maintain accurate, confidential health records. </li></ul> <p>Qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>At least 3 years of experience in homeless services, emergency shelter, or human services settings required. </li><li>Prior supervisory or leadership experience strongly preferred. </li><li>Deep understanding of low-barrier shelter principles, harm reduction, and trauma-informed care. </li><li>Strong judgement, crisis intervention, de-escalation, and conflict resolution skills. </li><li>Excellent communication and leadership skills; ability to lead a diverse team with empathy and accountability. </li><li>Ability to remain calm and grounded in high-stress situations. </li><li>Comfort working with individuals who use substances and/or are actively experiencing symptoms of mental illness. </li><li>Familiarity with issues affecting people experiencing homelessness, including systemic inequities. </li><li>Computer literacy and experience with documentation of activities. </li><li>Excellent written and verbal communication skills. </li><li>Ability to work flexible hours including overnights, weekends, and holidays. </li></ul> <p>Working Conditions:</p> <ul> <li>Shelter environment with potential exposure to mental health and substance use crises. </li><li>Must be comfortable working evening and overnight hours. </li><li>Regular movement around facility; occasional lifting (up to 25 lbs). </li></ul> <p>Why Work With Us?
