Click here for more information. </li></ul> <p>POSITION REQUIRMENTS:</p> <ul> <li>Full-time </li><li>37.5 hours per week </li><li>Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:00pm. Must be available for emergencies and scheduled overtime. May be exposed to extreme weather. </li><li>Eligible candidates in this class must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license. </li><li>A medical exam, drug screen, and criminal background check will be required prior to offer of employment. </li></ul> <p>ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:</p> <p>Western Connecticut State University's Environmental & Facilities Maintenance Trades department is responsible for providing trades services for both campuses of the University and are responsible for the full range of plumbing duties including operating equipment to fulfill job function.</p> <p>ABOUT THE ROLE:</p> <p>The QCW Plumbing role at Western Connecticut State University includes a wide range of tasks to ensure the smooth operation and maintenance of the campus facilities. The candidate selected for this position will be tasked with a variety of plumbing duties across both campuses. The QCW Plumber's role is integral to the university's commitment to providing a safe and functional academic environment. </li><li>Assembles, installs and repairs air, gas, water, steam and sewer disposal systems; </li><li>Cuts, bends, reams and threads pipes; </li><li>Caulks and tests joints; </li><li>Installs and repairs gas, water, steam and sanitary fixtures; </li><li>Covers and insulates tanks, pipes and related objects; </li><li>Works with high pressure hot water and steam systems; </li><li>Performs minor tests for fuel specific gravity and gas leaks; </li><li>Adds water treatment chemicals to boilers; </li><li>Makes estimates of time, personnel and determines and obtains required materials on assigned tasks; </li><li>Keeps necessary records; </li><li>May braze pipes; </li><li>May inspect and repair steam traps and/or vaults fed by main system at various locations; </li><li>May remove pipe insulation materials associated with the repair of pipes and fittings using OSHA approved methods; </li><li>May inspect and repair medical gas systems; </li><li>May perform duties related to similar trade areas as required; </li><li>May act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts; </li><li>May operate heavy equipment; </li><li>May respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state owned airports; </li><li>Performs related duties as required. </li></ul> <p>KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY</p> <ul> <li> <p>Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods and standard plumbing and steamfitting trade practices;</p> </li><li> <p>Skills</p> </li><li> <p>interpersonal skills;</p> </li><li> <p>oral and written communication skills;</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to</p> </li><li> <p>prepare estimates and keep shop records;</p> </li><li> <p>utilize computer software.</p> </li></ul> <p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE</p> <p>Four (4) years of experience in tasks in the plumbing and steamfitting trade.</p> <p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE</p> <p>Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled plumbing and steamfitting trades.</p> <p>NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Skilled Maintainer or Transportation Maintainer 2.</p> <p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED</p> <ul> <li>Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience. </li><li>At the University of Connecticut: Satisfactory performance and completion of the UConn Facilities Internship Training Program may be substituted for the General and Special Experience as determined by UConn Facilities Operations and Human Resources Management. </li><li>At other state agencies: Two (2) years of experience as a Qualified Craft Worker Intern in a designated maintenance trade area may be substituted for the General and Special Experience. </li><li>Experience performing technical duties within the plumbing and steamfitting trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year for year basis. </li></ul> <p>PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS</p> <p>Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate in their application:</p> <ul> <li>Commercial/industrial plumbing experience. </li><li>Experience troubleshooting, repairing sewer disposal systems, and performing water treatment. </li><li>Experience snaking out drain and resolving water and waste backups, as well as grease traps. </li><li>Experience soldering, brazing, threading piping and insulating pipes. </li><li>Experience sourcing necessary materials. </li><li>Experience performing highly skilled plumbing tasks in accordance with standard trade practices. </li><li>Experience updating projects and work orders through electronic systems. </li><li>Experience working independently. </li><li>Experience providing excellent oral and written communication and interacting with customers. </li></ul> <p>SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS</p> <ul> <li>University of Connecticut: Incumbents in this class are required to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications including possession and retention of a State of Connecticut plumbing and pipefitting license. </li><li>Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess or acquire and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications. </li></ul> <p>CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS</p> <p>At state airports: In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.</p> <p>PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS</p> <ul> <li>Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class. </li><li>A physical examination may be required. </li></ul> <p>WORKING CONDITIONS</p> <ul> <li>Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles; and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment, extreme weather conditions and/or environmental conditions. </li><li>The appointing authority may require completion of hazardous materials training programs, such as asbestos, PCB, PFAS, consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class.
