<p>General Overview of Position</p> <p>The Kenosha Police Department has established a student internship program to assist students in furthering their experience and education in the field of criminal justice. The goal of this program is to expose selected students to a sampling of the training, responsibilities, and duties required of a police officer in order to provide efficient and effective police services within the community.</p> <p>The Kenosha Police Department will make reasonable efforts to accommodate the academic requirements and other responsibilities of applicants. The length of the internship is one semester. Internships are available for Fall, Winter and Summer semesters.</p> <p>Example of Duties & Responsibilities</p> <p>The internship provides qualified students with practical work experience that complements their academic course work, as well as course credit (if approved by the college or university). It also provides the Kenosha Police Department with an opportunity to involve college students in various aspects of police work. The internship is designed to provide students with an opportunity to integrate theory and practice. The internship is an unpaid, non-sworn position that varies from 8 hours to 24 hours per week, as agreed by the Police Department, Intern, and college/university (if applicable). Students are able to gain valuable work experience, on-the-job training, and have an opportunity to develop a professional networking base for future positions in government service or law enforcement. All of the requirements must be agreed to by the Kenosha Police Department, the intern applicant, and the college/university (if applicable) before the internship starts.</p> <p>Major Duties and Required Technical Skills: Specific areas where interns may be assigned include:</p> <ul> <li>Records Department </li><li>Detective Bureau </li><li>Court Liaison Function </li><li>Grant Writing and Oversight </li><li>Emergency Communication Center </li><li>Fiscal Oversight </li><li>Police Operations and Police Administration </li></ul> <p>However, through sit-alongs, ride-alongs, and tours, interns may also be exposed to more aspects of the Department and operations. Project assignments may include surveys, data entry, research projects, case follow-up, community outreach, social media development, and assistance. The intern assignments will vary and are designed to allow students the experience of the daily operations within a law enforcement agency and to also meet the needs of the Kenosha Police Department. Interns must be detail-oriented, organized, able to complete projects within timelines and under minimal supervision, and proficient in Microsoft Office, research methods, and technical writing. Interns are expected to keep a journal of activities to aid in the evaluation process. The progress and oversight of individual interns are monitored by the Office of the Chief of Police or his designee and may be periodically reported to the college/university to which the intern belongs.</p> <p>Requirements</p> <ul> <li>Minimum grade point average of 2.5 </li><li>Full-time student at an accredited university or technical college pursuing a </li></ul> <p>degree in criminal justice. Students pursuing a bachelor's degree must be a junior</p> <p>or senior, and those at a technical college must be in their final semester.</p> <ul> <li>Students must be sponsored by a college with a requirement to complete an internship. </li></ul> <p>Method of Selection</p> <p>The selection process is competitive due to the limit of two interns per semester.</p> <p>All documents should be uploaded with the application.</p> <ul> <li>Application </li><li>Resume </li><li>Referral from a faculty member or teacher from the current school </li><li>Prior work experience, extracurricular activities, military, and special skills will be considered </li></ul> <p>Oral Interview</p> <p>An oral interview will be conducted to evaluate communication skills, knowledge of law</p> <p>enforcement and the level of interest in the internship.</p> <p>A comprehensive background check will be conducted before selection.</p>
