Place tissues in fixative solution to stabilize and prevent decay. Section sample blocks with a microtome. Select stain and staining procedure to highlight the feature of interest.</p> <p>This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated vaccination requirements, or be approved for an exemption, prior to the first day of work. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.</p> <p>Learn more about the great benefits of working for University of Utah: benefits.utah.edu</p> <p>Responsibilities</p> <p>HistoTechnologist, I</p> <ul> <li>Processing and proper handling of all specimens received in laboratory in preparation for pathologist review and diagnosis </li><li>Responsible for appropriately performing testing, including, but not limited to routine, special, immunohistochemical, and/or immunofluorescence stains </li><li>Prepares stains, reagents, and solutions in accordance with laboratory standard written procedures </li><li>Performs microtomy to render quality sections for diagnoses. </li><li>Responsible for labeling, entering, and tracking specimens and slides in the LIS (Laboratory Information System) </li><li>Be familiar and adheres to all laboratory policies, procedures, and SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) </li><li>Maintains laboratory work areas by performing preventative maintenance on instruments and equipment as well as keeping work area clean and organized </li><li>Adheres to the University PROMISE Standards </li><li>Adheres to HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) guidelines and patient confidentiality </li><li>Adheres to all laboratory safety protocols as outlined in the laboratory Chemical Hygiene Plan, including, but not limited to, wearing PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and proper handling and disposal of biological waste, sharps, and chemicals </li><li>Adheres to all compliance, inspections, and operational procedures from accrediting agencies, CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) and CAP (College of American Pathologists) </li></ul> <p>Dermatopathology Laboratory Responsibilities include:</p> <ul> <li>Evaluates all labeling for accuracy and completeness to ensure correct data is entered into the LIS. </li><li>Observes and describes tissue. </li><li>Documents description of tissue via dictation into LIS. </li><li>Sections, inks, and places tissue into cassettes for overnight processing. </li><li>Places cassettes into processors and initiates automatic program run. </li><li>Adheres to all HIPAA guidelines and respects patient confidentiality. </li><li>Adheres to all laboratory safety protocols including wearing PPE as necessary. </li><li>Maintains excellent productivity standards and adheres by the University PROMISE standards. </li><li>Maintains laboratory work area by performing preventative maintenance on instruments and equipment as well as keeping work area clean and orderly. </li><li>Provides additional general laboratory support where needed, i.e., CAP/CLIA inspection preparation. </li></ul> <p>Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience or a master's (or equivalency) degree.</p> <p>This is an Entry-Level position in the General Professional track.</p> <p>Job Code: PZ6811</p> <p>Grade: P13</p> <p>The higher end of the listed pay range is utilized for applicants with many years of directly related work experience.</p> <p>Minimum Qualifications</p> <p>EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).</p> <p>HistoTechnologist, I: Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience or a master's (or equivalency) degree.</p> <p>Preferences</p> <p>Meets CLIA minimum education requirements:</p> <p>Meet one of the following:</p> <ol> <li>Associate degree in chemical or biological science in a laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution </li></ol> <p>OR</p> <ol start="2"> <li>Have education equivalence to: </li></ol> <p>a. At least 60 semester hours from an accredited institution consisting of either:</p> <ul> <li>24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses </li></ul> <p>OR</p> <ul> <li>24 semester hours of science courses that include: </li></ul> <p>o 6 semester hours of chemistry</p> <p>o 6 semester hours of biology</p> <p>And</p> <p>o 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination</p> <p>Type Benefited Staff Special Instructions Summary Additional Information</p> <p>The University is a participating employer with Utah Retirement Systems ("URS").
