<p>General Description</p> <p>Fleet Technicians perform highly skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of all types of automotive/fleet and construction equipment within the Fleet Service Division. The work is characterized by the high degree of complexity, independence, and technical discretion and may involve providing leadership and mechanical expertise to other workers. Given the wide range of equipment this position will work on, the initial training period will introduce you to equipment unique to the City of Madison. The work is performed under the general supervision of a foreperson and is reviewed for overall results.</p> <p>In addition to the City's generous employee benefits package, Fleet Technicians receive a monthly tool allowance, safety shoe allowance, are provided uniforms, and have access to the Fleet Division's on-site fitness room. Fleet Technicians assigned to the second shift receive a $3.00 per hour shift differential for regularly scheduled hours worked from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm.</p> <p>The current recruitment is to fill two (2) vacant positions. These are second shift positions, with the potential to move to first shift. The selected candidates will complete a two-to-three month training period on the first shift at our Nakoosa Trail site before moving to a second shift schedule.</p> <p>Normal shifts are Monday through Friday, with hours from 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm (second shift) or 7:30 am to 3:30 pm (first shift).</p> <p>Employees may be eligible for loan forgiveness through thePublic Service Loan Forgiveness Program.</p> <p>Black, Indigenous, people of color, women, trans, nonbinary, and individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Even if every item on the job posting doesn't match your experience perfectly, we encourage you to apply and share how your skills and experience can best serve our community.</p> <p>Examples of Duties and Responsibilities</p> <p>After Training:</p> <ul> <li>Perform repairs on automotive/fleet equipment such as automobiles, light trucks, heavy trucks (over 26,000 lbs.), tractors, gang-mowers, semi-tractor and trailers and on other types of equipment such as street sweepers, semi-tractors, end loaders, asphalt heaters, motor graders, fire engines, aerial trucks, SCBA masks, and other miscellaneous motorized equipment. </li><li>Receive and review repair orders. Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions using appropriate test equipment such as engine analyzer, multi-meters, electronic test equipment, gauges and other testing equipment. Prepare time and material estimates when necessary. </li><li>Identify and obtain necessary replacement parts. </li><li>Adjust and tune diesel and gas engines/motors including valve adjustments and timing. Repair manual and automatic transmissions and all linkage systems. Overhaul clutches, differential drive trains, shafts and u-joints. Maintain and repair power and manual steering systems and all components of the fuel, cooling/heating, exhaust and emission control systems. </li><li>Remove and replace major components as needed. </li><li>Check, test and repair components and accessories of electrical, lighting and electronic systems. </li><li>Inspect, adjust and repair all components of hydraulic, air, electric and mechanical brake systems. Adjust, repair and replace suspension systems. </li><li>Perform road test and/or operational checks on all equipment repaired. </li><li>Review repair order for completion and process necessary forms and records. Create, edit and close out repair orders using a computer. Post parts and materials to repair order. </li><li>Receive and send intra and inter departmental e-mail and correspondence utilizing the City of Madison computer system. </li><li>Train and/or assist lower level workers. </li><li>Assist with general housekeeping of shop and immediate work area. </li><li>Perform related work as required. </li></ul> <p>Minimum Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>Three (3) years of experience in the skilled repair of a variety of automotive equipment or heavy equipment; AND </li><li>Coursework in automotive mechanics or heavy equipment repair. </li><li>OR- </li><li>Completion of an accredited automotive apprenticeship program; AND </li><li>Two (2) years of experience equivalent to that gained as an Automotive Maintenance Worker for the City of Madison. </li></ul> <p>Equivalent combinations of experience, education, and training will be considered.</p> <p>Although not required, hybrid-electric, electric, and/or alternative fuel vehicle knowledge would be a plus. In addition, experience repairing emissions aftertreatment systems is desired.</p> <p>The City of Madison strives to provide exceptional customer service to all its residents and visitors. Therefore, successful candidates will have demonstrated ability to work effectively with multicultural communities.</p> <p>For a complete list of the knowledge, skills and abilities, please view the class specification.</p> <p>Special Requirements</p> <p>Possession of a valid Class A Wisconsin Commercial Driver's License without Air Brake Restriction to operate tractor trailers. The successful candidate must have passed the written portion of the relevant Department of Transportation testing process before starting employment. A condition of continued employment is passage of the skills portion of the test and obtaining the required operator's license within twelve (12) months. The City will provide training to take the skills test and obtain the required license with the necessary endorsements. Upon obtaining or renewing a Commercial Driver's License, the City will reimburse employees for that part of the license which exceeds the base license cost.</p> <p>Physical Requirements:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Ability to lift 25 pounds repeatedly, 50-70 pounds frequently, and heavier objects occasionally.</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to engage in strenuous activity consistent with the trade (including bending, twisting, stooping, climbing ladders, etc.).</p> </li></ul>
