Discover your opportunities at Yale!</p> <p>Salary Range</p> <p>$103,000.00 - $119,875.00</p> <p>Overview Assumes an active role in the senior management of the University Police Department leading and influencing the Department's mission and supervising the day-to-day safety and security operations of the University; enforces all applicable laws and regulations on campus and within the University community; provides for the safety and protection of life and property within the University community; and coordinates activities with other law enforcement agencies. May be assigned to patrol operations, investigative services or training & professional standards, or other assignment directed by the Chief. Required Skills and Abilities 1. Leadership, supervisory, and training skills to include coaching, and mentoring. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Developed conflict management skills. 2. Thorough knowledge of crime scene techniques to include crime scene processing. Knowledge of forensic science as it applies to collection and preservation of evidence. 3. Thorough knowledge of investigative and interrogation techniques. 4. Knowledge of police equipment, such as computers, radios, firearms, batons, and less-than-lethal weapons. Knowledge of University alarm systems. Preferred Education, Experience and Skills Thorough knowledge of current State laws, City of New Haven ordinances, and University rules and regulations. Yale Police supervisory experience preferred.</p> <p>Principal Responsibilities</p> <ol> <li>Provides for a safe and secure environment for the University community. 2. Issues, through line of command, instructions, orders and directions to Sergeants, Detectives, Officers and civilian staff. Manages and supervises activities on a specific shift, unit, or assigned area as designated by the Chief of Police or his/her designee. 3. Oversees the enforcement of current State laws, City ordinances, and University rules and regulations. 4. Implements and interprets department policies, procedures and standards. Determines the methods to be used in different routine and emergency situations. 5. Provides instruction and guidance in police methods and techniques to Officers. Coordinates and performs inspections of personnel and equipment. Ensures compliance with all applicable procedures, laws, and judicial regulations. 6. Determines immediate actions to be taken in emergency situations. May coordinate police efforts at the scene of serious crimes. Coordinates efforts with local police departments in apprehending suspects. Responds to emergency or life-threatening criminal situations. Provides briefings and input on policy formulation. 7. Interacts with internal contacts such as department heads, deans, masters, and personnel in various University administrative offices to provide and/or solicit information related to incidents, complaints, investigations and related safety concerns, and to place safety-related facilities repair requests. Interacts with external contacts such as Federal, State, and local level law enforcement agencies to discuss security issues, and to participate in cooperative efforts and exchange information. 8. Trains, coaches, mentors and evaluates performance. Works closely with sergeants in identifying substandard performance of personnel and provides to those mentoring, coaching and training. 9. Ensures that complaints made against the University Police Department or any of its employees are properly recorded and investigations are initiated. 10. Performs related work as required. 11. May perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience Five years as a Yale Police Officer. Required License(s) or Certification(s) Certification by the Municipal Police Training Council and by POST Academy.
