We offer stable employment with a great benefits package so you can focus on providing the best support to the citizens of Chesapeake.</p> <p>This position:</p> <ul> <li>Leads the City's bridge inspection team by planning and executing NBIS bridge inspections and ancillary sign structures inspection. </li><li>Designs in-house repairs and develops maintenance schedules for static and movable bridges' structural, mechanical and electrical components. </li><li>Supervises an engineer and welders, mechanics, and electricians in the inspection and maintenance of critical infrastructure. </li><li>Writes and/or reviews inspection reports, structure inventory & appraisal sheets, sketches, and element datasheets. Reviews consultant's inspection reports. </li><li>Performs and/or reviews load rating for structures. </li><li>Responds to after-hours breakdowns at movable bridges and other bridge or weather incidents. </li><li>Works with other divisions or departments within the City to complete repair or replacement projects. </li></ul> <p>Requires:</p> <ul> <li>Virginia Professional Engineer license (structural engineer preferred). </li><li>NBIS team leader designation and ability to supervise in-house staff (engineer, bridge maintenance mechanics, and electricians) preferred. Obtain within 12 months of employment. </li><li>Possess or ability to complete National Highway Institute course No. 130055-Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges, 130078-Non-Redundant Steel Tension Member Inspection, and 130087-Inspection of Ancillary Structures. </li><li>Ability to obtain VDOT work zone safety setup, fall protection, and confined space certifications. </li><li>Ability to understand normal movable bridge operations and troubleshoot operational issues. </li><li>Good supervisory, interpersonal, and technical skills. Ability to interpret and explain maintenance needs and corrective actions. </li><li>Ability to prioritize, track, and oversee projects with respect to schedule and budget. </li><li>Ability to direct personnel during weather incidents and communicate progress to department command centers. </li><li>Must be certified to operate the City's movable bridges within 24 months of hire (in-house training provided). </li></ul> <p>The City of Chesapeake offers an exceptional range of benefits. Please browse our Benefits Brochure for a full list of benefits and employee perks.</p> <p>Required Qualifications</p> <p>VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:</p> <p>Requires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related field.</p> <p>EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:</p> <p>In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of five years of related, full-time equivalent experience.</p> <p>SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:</p> <p>Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. A Professional Engineer license is also required. Depending on position, State and/or City certification(s) may be required.</p> <p>SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:</p> <p>Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.</p> <p>Preferred Qualifications</p> <p>Class B CDL within six months of employment (in-house training available) preferred.</p>
