<p>Westminster University</p> <p>Instrument & Lab Specialist</p> <p>Position Type: Full-Time, Benefited</p> <p>Work Location: Westminster University Campus</p> <p>1840 South 1300 East</p> <p>Salt Lake City, UT 84105</p> <p>About the Role:</p> <p>The Instrument and Laboratory Specialist will be responsible for the maintenance of science equipment, instrumentation, computational software applications, stockroom and lab facilities within the Meldrum Science Center, the preparation of laboratories, and the training of faculty and students using Meldrum Science Center resources. This is a full-time 12 months 40 hours per week position with a possible reduction of hours during some summer months.</p> <p>Minimum Qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>Requires a bachelor's degree in a science field, with preference of masters. </li><li>Experience and/or training in a modern scientific laboratory setting where responsibilities included the operation, repair, and maintenance of instruments such as HPLC, GC, mass spectrometers, U.V./Vis spectrophotometers, FT-IR, PCR, etc. is required. </li><li>Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. </li><li>Ability to liaise with technical representatives from instrumentation companies. </li><li>Mathematical skills that are commensurate with the operation of advanced scientific equipment including the ability to calculate Std Error, tolerances, and quantitation for calibrating equipment according to NIST standards. </li><li>Knowledge of instrument/computer connectivity, instrument operating software systems, and instrument networking. Experience with Linux system administration is desirable. </li></ul> <p>Key Responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li>Repair and maintain the equipment and instrumentation of the Science Division. </li><li>Coordinate all repairs with outside vendors if a requisite repair is outside the capability of the Instrument and Laboratory Specialist. </li><li>Edit Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) for instruments for ease of use, clarity and instrument updates, creating new SOPs for new instruments and equipment. </li><li>Train faculty and students in the efficient and safe use of instruments. </li><li>Provide technical computer support specific to the needs of science faculty and students related to instrument network connectivity, software installation and upgrades, and troubleshooting software applications. </li><li>Order and install new equipment as faculty requires. </li><li>Aid science faculty in the preparation and teaching of laboratory sections of chemistry courses. </li><li>Manage and oversee the work of student employees and the Lab Manager within the Meldrum Science Center. </li><li>Ensure laboratory safety is being followed in the various labs. </li><li>Ensure chemical inventories are updated on a regular basis. </li><li>Act as liaison between scientific vendors and the Science Faculty of the Meldrum Science Center </li><li>Act as a liaison with the Legal, Risk Management and Safety Department for coordinating safety training. </li><li>Perform other duties as assigned. </li></ul> <p>Skills and Competencies:</p> <p>The required skills for this role include strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a dynamic laboratory environment. Excellent clear communication and collaboration will be crucial to work efficiently with faculty, students, and vendors. Great attention to detail, adaptability and commitment to safety to help maintain a well-functioning and compliant lab setting.
