<p>Position Type:</p> <p>Parks and Recreation Line Employees</p> <p>Date Posted:</p> <p>6/18/2025</p> <p>Location:</p> <p>Parks and Recreation Offices</p> <p>&nbsp&nbspAdditional Information: Show/Hide</p> <p>Town of Vernon</p> <p>Title: Recreation & Education for Kids (REK) Counselor</p> <p>Pay rate: $18.7272-$19.7676</p> <p>JOB SUMMARY</p> <p>Responsible work in the planning, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of a variety of challenging, engaging, interesting, age appropriate activities for a specific unit within an after school program.</p> <p>ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS</p> <ul> <li>Is a first responder for all medical emergency procedures and may be exposed to possible health risks. </li><li>Supervises lavatories, assists children in daily living skills, and may be required to perform janitorial duties. </li><li>Responsible for the daily accountability, supervision, health and safety of their assigned unit. </li><li>Resolves conflicts between participants. </li><li>Plans and implements daily activities for participants in conjunction with director and other staff members. </li></ul> <p>OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS</p> <ul> <li>Completes required program forms. </li><li>Attends weekly staff meetings. </li><li>Maintains facility and all Town equipment. </li><li>Adheres to and enforces all Town and departmental policies and procedures. </li><li>Performs related work as required. </li></ul> <p>KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge of a variety of leisure skills such as arts and crafts, music, drama, physical fitness, nature, team and individual sports. </li><li>Ability to deal effectively with parents, participants, and other Town employees. </li><li>Strong leadership. </li><li>Ability to motivate staff and participants. </li><li>Ability to work well with children ages 4 to 12 and possess an understanding of their social, emotional and physical abilities </li><li>Strong creativity and organizational skills </li></ul> <p>PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORT/ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS</p> <ul> <li>Able to lift light objects between 20 and 50 pounds. </li><li>Able to perform moderately difficult manipulative skills such as writing and typing. </li><li>Able to perform tasks which require hand eye coordination such as demonstrating a specific leisure skill. </li><li>Able to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods. </li><li>Able to see objects far away and closely. </li><li>Able to hear normal sounds with some background noise such as a call for help from a child. </li><li>Able to communicate through human speech as in talking with a child. </li><li>Able to concentrate on moderate detail with constant interruption. </li><li>Needs to attend to task/function for 25 - 40 minutes </li><li>Able to remember multiple tasks/assignments given to self and others during the course of the day. </li><li>Exposure to blood, body tissues or fluids, seasonal conditions in outside weather, and to loud or unpleasant noises. </li></ul> <p>JOB QUALIFICATIONS</p> <ul> <li>16 years of age or older </li><li>Must possess previous experience with children. </li><li>Attend mandatory training session in CPR, First Aid, Blood Borne Pathogens and overall departmental policies </li><li>Must be able to work flexible hours. </li></ul> <p>The above description is illustrative.
