Link to benefits. https://jobs.ornl.gov/content/Benefits/?locale=en_US</p> <p>Overview:</p> <p>The Irradiation Engineering (IE) Group within the Fuel Development Section of the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks applications for an applied technical staff position, with emphasis in the area of irradiation engineering.</p> <p>The central mission of the IE Group is to design, fabricate, and build irradiation capsules to support characterization of fluence-resistant structural materials and improved nuclear fuel for customers within the US Department of Energy, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Department of Defense, and other government and private organizations. The IE Group provides an important combination of advanced analytical analysis, experiment development, and hands-on fabrication skills. The primary function of this position is to conceptualize and develop experiments for the purpose of irradiating advanced structural materials and fuels. This includes developing neutronic designs, establishing reactor safety bases, and documenting critical experiment attributes in accordance with quality requirements.</p> <p>Major Duties/Responsibilities:</p> <p>The successful candidate will perform the work needed to develop experiments that test advanced structural materials and fuels in a nuclear environment and will support the design, fabrication, and irradiation of those experiments. Specific tasks may include developing designs using modern computer aided design tools, performing safety analyses to ensure safe experiment operation, calculating nuclear heating rates using codes such as MCNP, SCALE, etc., and tracking experiments as they are irradiated. This position requires analytical, design, and managerial skills to successfully complete assigned projects. The selected candidate will be responsible for interacting with staff members inside and outside the IE Group and working on projects in a team environment. The successful candidate is expected to be able to work independently, develop creative design solutions, lead or perform neutronic analyses, fully document work performed, and effectively interface with project sponsors. Additionally, this position requires that the candidate work with other members of the IE group to write proposals, estimate costs, and help pursue new funding opportunities.</p> <p>Qualifications Required:</p> <ul> <li>Candidates must hold at least an MS in nuclear or mechanical engineering or physics and 4 to 6 years of relevant experience. Excellent verbal, presentation, and writing skills are required to enable effective interaction with technical peers, program managers, and sponsors. </li></ul> <p>Qualifications Desired:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Background and experience in neutron experiment design for research reactors</p> </li><li> <p>Experience using neutronics codes such as MCNP and the SCALE code system</p> </li><li> <p>Experience with ASME Nuclear Quality Assurance (NQA-1) best practices for software quality assurance</p> </li><li> <p>Demonstrated experience with documentation of experiment design and safety in accordance with conduct of engineering and conduct of operations best practices</p> </li></ul> <p>Special Requirements:</p> <ul> <li>Q Clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position.
