<p>EQUITY AND ENGAGEMENT</p> <p>COUNSELOR SPECIALIST</p> <p>SUMMARY DESCRIPTION</p> <p>Under the general direction of the Office of Counseling, the Counseling Equity and Engagement Program Specialist will provide an assigned zone/level i.e. High School with support in the implementation of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model, be available for day to day school counselor coaching in the functions and responsibilities of a school counselor and support the counselor's role in MTSS. The specialists will assist with systemic collaboration to encourage school site equity and family engagement. The specialist will work within schools to increase student engagement and improve school climate by sharing culturally responsive practices, science-based school climate and culture strategies, and provide district-level connections at each school site. The specialists will meet comprehensive goals and objectives that include aligning and connecting systems within each school, gathering and evaluating data, and will attend district level meetings and trainings. Performs other related work as required.</p> <p>EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES</p> <p>Support school counselor assigned level vertical meetings; participate in the ASCA cohort and ASCA advisory meetings and onsite counseling consultation; support school counseling goals and initiatives such as child abuse reporting, bullying intervention, community referrals, IATs, standard of care for foster care students, SARB, DIAT and site level data collection, etc.; work within schools to assist with student case management and referral along the pathway to graduation; support school site family and student engagement plans and school climate through monitoring, training and support of the student and family engagement of the School Improvement Plans, Work to align school counselors to Family Engagement specialist work, address academically at-risk; work with the Office of Teaching, Learning and Leading and the Counseling Coordinator to facilitate unresolved concerns between parents and schools; support schools with implementation assistance and technical support on a menu of equity strategy choices including but not limited to book studies on culturally responsive schools, equity site teams, and professional development on culturally responsive school practices; support school sites to incorporate comprehensive counseling, equity and engagement as a result of the specialists site case management; and assist sites to systemically understand, identify and use the inter-dependent relationships of MTSS, equity, engagement and ASCA.</p> <p>EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS</p> <p>Education/Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:</p> <ul> <li>Education: A Master's degree from an accredited college or university in counseling and educational psychology or related field; </li></ul> <p>AND</p> <ul> <li>Experience: Four (4) years of school counseling experience. </li></ul> <p>Knowledge of: ASCA National Counseling Model, school counseling program development and implementation; basic principles of behavior theory and behavioral strategies, Response to Intervention/ Positive Behavioral Supports, IAT, DIAT,, Infinite Campus, substance abuse and violence prevention, School culture and climate, the pathway to graduation, college applications and supports, student and parental engagement; and student assessment.</p> <p>Skill at: Connecting systems, goals, services and programs; organizing and scheduling presentations; team building and coaching; communication and collaborating with site administrators, counselors, teachers and parents; communicating effectively orally and in writing; evaluating, assessing, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with selected sites; data entry, and writing reports. Dual language desired, but not required.</p> <p>Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a valid Nevada school counseling license; and possession of a Master's degree in counseling or related field.</p> <p>Physical Demands: The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.</p> <p>Work Environment: The environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, residences, or commercial vehicles, e.g., use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals. New employees hired by Washoe County School District are normally placed on the entry step of the grade of the position.
