<p>General Summary & Essential Responsibilities</p> <p>JOB SUMMARY</p> <p>Performs professional library work supervising a library branch or managing a specialty department in library administration. Work involves continuous public contact requiring the exercise of considerable patience, tact, and diplomacy, and the exercise of independent judgment and initiative in scheduling, assigning, and coordinating work with that of other units within the system.</p> <p>ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS</p> <ul> <li>Participates in the selection, placement, promotion, training, development, scheduling, discipline, safety, and appraisal of professional, paraprofessional, and volunteer personnel in the methods, practices, and techniques used in library systems and/or area of specialty as assigned. </li><li>Supervises maintenance of library building, equipment, and furnishings. </li><li>Provides outreach for the branch; visits schools and recreation centers to promote library services and programs; attends meetings of neighborhood organizations and various committees; provides services to assisted living and other local facilities; promotes literacy programs; attends special events to promote use of the library and literacy; and writes weekly newspaper column. </li><li>Provides exceptional customer service to library patrons and the public; provides assistance and information related to library programs, services, materials, facilities, equipment, fees, and procedures; resolves problems and/or complaints via all forms of communication. </li><li>Assists patrons in requesting, selecting, and locating library materials; research book titles, book availability, patron records, or related information; and assists patrons in the use of public access computers and internet. </li><li>Selects, retains, and develops library collections; reviews patron requests; selects books for purchase; prepares order lists for purchase of library materials; and removes/weeds outdated, worn, and little-used materials from library collections as needed. </li><li>Develops and implements library programs; plans, organizes, and conducts educational and cultural programs, book talks, and other programs and events. </li><li>Administers branch financial activities; completes financial paperwork and processes; prepares and submits bank deposits; completes account coding for credit card transactions; and monitors expenditures to ensure compliance with approved budget. </li><li>Provides technical support and monitors library software and equipment, reports problems and failures to IT or vendors for assistance as appropriate. </li><li>Represents the library at various meetings, civic events, and on assigned committees and governing boards; attends meetings and participates in planning activities; performs related speaking engagements and public relations activities. </li><li>Performs original cataloging, oversees the cataloging format, and makes decisions pertaining to the use of MARC records. </li><li>Provides exceptional customer assistance, problem-solving, and/or complaint resolution by all forms of communication. </li></ul> <p>Min. Education, Licenses and Certifications</p> <p>Education and Experience:</p> <p>An equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Master's Degree</p> </li><li> <p>Library Science</p> </li><li> <p>Three (3) years of progressive experience in library operations and programming.</p> </li></ul> <p>Licenses and/or Certificates:</p> <ul> <li>Must maintain a valid driver's license. </li></ul> <p>Knowledge, Skills and Abilities</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge of departmental policies, plans, and procedures. </li><li>Knowledge of modern office practices, plans, and procedures. </li><li>Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other job-related computer programs and software applications. </li><li>Knowledge of operations and practices of local government; ability to analyze and interpret departmental functions, procedures and policies. </li><li>Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of modern library management and operations, with particular emphasis on the special field of assignment. </li><li>Considerable knowledge of methods, practices, and techniques used in library acquisition, classification, and cataloging, and the ability to apply this knowledge to specific work assignments. </li><li>Considerable knowledge of basic reference methods, techniques, and sources used in library work. </li><li>Considerable knowledge of book selection standards and policies of the library system. </li><li>Strong analytical and research skills. </li><li>Skill in effective communication, both orally and in writing, to include public speaking. </li><li>Skill in prioritizing and organizing work. </li><li>Skill in the use of office equipment such as a computer, multi-line telephone system, scanner, fax machine, and copier. </li><li>Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in applying and interpreting department rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. </li><li>Ability to make recommendations and to use resourcefulness and tact in solving new problems. </li><li>Ability to ascertain priorities and meet deadlines and objectives. </li><li>Ability to plan, organize, direct, and appraise the work of assigned personnel. </li><li>Ability to develop effective proposals. </li><li>Ability to maintain accurate records and reports. </li><li>Ability to operate a motor vehicle. </li><li>Ability to provide internal/external guidance and customer assistance via all forms of communication. </li><li>Ability to use computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes. </li><li>Ability to author reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. </li><li>Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with managers, service providers, other employees, and the general public. </li></ul> <p>Supplemental Information</p> <p>PHYSICAL DEMANDS</p> <p>Walking, sitting, hearing, seeing up close, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions.
