<p>Essential Duties</p> <ol> <li>Coordinates the work in a unit. 2. May perform a range of public and technical service functions. 3. Oversees, instructs and coordinates activities of staff. 4. Prepares, arranges, revises, photocopies, and distributes finding aids, guides, registers and other descriptive controls for manuscript collection. 5. Prepares and edits textual descriptions and other explanatory material for the registers, guides, inventories or lists. 6. Assists in establishing preliminary physical and bibliographic control of new accessions to a collection. 7. Performs clerical functions incidental to library activities. </li></ol> <p>Required Education and Experience</p> <p>Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.</p> <p>Background Check Requirements</p> <p>All candidates for employment will be subject to pre-employment background screening for this position, which may include motor vehicle, DOT certification, drug testing and credit checks based on the position description and job requirements. For additional information on the background check requirements and process visit "Learn about background checks" under the Applicant Support Resources section of Careers on the It's Your Yale website.</p> <p>Position Focus:</p> <p>The Archival Description Unit supports the robust acquisitions and archival description program of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library and Yale University Library special collections as well as responsible for description of archival collections in all formats and to various levels.</p> <p>Under the general supervision of the Archivist Supervisor, the Archives Assistant assists with establishing physical and intellectual control over collections. Carries out arrangement of large and/or complex archival and manuscript collections, as directed by the Archivist Supervisor or their assigns, based on the material and available information and in consultation with others as necessary. Creates and updates archival description, in the archival management and integrated library systems, and description of digital surrogates in the digital assets ingest and cataloging system.</p> <p>Applies basic standards for archival storage and preservation of collection material, including reboxing and refoldering; identifies problematic material in need of conservation treatment. In consultation with the Archivist Supervisor or their assigns, plans own work as well as plans and directs the work of student assistants.</p> <p>Compiles statistics for work completed by themselves. Oversees or completes box and folder labeling as well as barcoding of archival and manuscript collections. Contributes to the development, review, and revision of departmental and unit manuals for archival description. Locates collection materials in the technical services processing workflow for departmental staff, as needed.</p> <p>May assist with the ingest of electronic files into a preservation repository or access system. Works cooperatively within the department to effectively accomplish assignments. Resolves workflow challenges and answers procedural questions within the team. Performs other related duties as needed. May engage in cross-departmental activities. May be required to assist in disaster recovery efforts. May be assigned to work at any library location.</p> <p>Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:</p> <p>Proven experience with archival processes and procedures for arrangement and description. Proven experience editing/creating records in Voyager, ArchivesSpace, or other comparable bibliographic and/or archival control systems.
