<p>The Office of Supportive Services, home to The Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) and Student Support Services (SSS) is seeking a Counselor for Academic Services for the Student Support Services (SSS) program. Student Support Services (SSS) is a Federal TRIO Program supported in part by funds from the U.S. Department of Education. The goals of SSS are to increase the retention and graduation rates of first-generation Syracuse University students from lower income earning families, by providing support services that assist with addressing barriers to completion of undergraduate degree requirements. SSS at Syracuse University serves approximately 250 students annually.</p> <p>Education and Experience</p> <ul> <li>Master's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary. </li><li>Some experience in counseling services is necessary. </li></ul> <p>Skills and Knowledge</p> <ul> <li>Background in academic advising and counseling for a diverse student population will be given priority. </li><li>Excellent interpersonal, communication, and writing skills. </li><li>Ability to build productive and supportive relationships with a diverse group of students. </li><li>Willingness to work closely with assigned students to help build academic and other skills necessary for retention and graduation. </li><li>Willingness to learn university procedures and other processes relevant to serving program population. </li><li>Administrative support, counseling and assessment skills preferred. </li></ul> <p>Responsibilities</p> <ul> <li>In collaboration with the Office of Admissions, review student applications and make recommendations for admission to sponsored program. </li><li>Coordinate presentations with the Admissions Office and Syracuse community high schools that provide information about Syracuse University and the sponsored program. </li><li>Assess academic needs of students and develop appropriate plans. </li><li>Conduct pre- and post-advising sessions for students. </li><li>Monitor academic progress as defined by state and federal guidelines as well as the schools and colleges of Syracuse University and implement strategies on a timely basis for the purposes of increasing retention promoting student success. </li><li>Provide holistic counseling services based on established theories of practice including developmental, solution-focused and multicultural approaches to sponsored students to address academic, financial, career and personal issues. </li><li>Assess students' adjustment to the University and make appropriate referrals as needed. </li><li>Monitor program students' financial aid information and advise students of all state and federal guidelines and processes. </li><li>Develop and instruct a pre-first year summer seminar for first-year students and transfer students that addresses issues of transition, study skills, orientation to Syracuse University and the Syracuse community, academic and personal resources and the policies and procedures of Syracuse University. </li><li>Develop and facilitate leadership activities (lobbying efforts, advisory boards, community service and leadership retreats) for program students and provide professional guidance for these activities. </li></ul> <p>Physical Requirements</p> <p>Not Applicable</p> <p>Tools/Equipment</p> <p>Not Applicable</p> <p>Application Instructions</p> <p>In addition to completing an online application, please attach a resume and cover letter.</p>
