<p>Job Posting End Date:</p> <p>03-09-2026</p> <p>Worker Sub-Type:</p> <p>Regular</p> <p>Scheduled Weekly Hours:</p> <p>40</p> <p>Position Summary:</p> <p>The County Engineer assists the Highway Commissioner in directing and administering Highway Department operations, construction, and maintenance. This position provides leadership in infrastructure project management, is involved with highway construction and maintenance activities; and can serve as a liaison with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), municipalities, contractors, and the public. The role combines strategic oversight with hands-on operational management to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective highway infrastructure and services. This is a unique opportunity to be involved with infrastructure projects from design through construction in Central Wisconsin.</p> <p>The Engineer will have the opportunity to work on the County's five-year paving plan, the County's Bridge Aid Program, the design and construction of the County's culvert replacements and bridge projects. With Marathon County's diverse infrastructure, the County Engineer will be exposed to a variety of projects and will have the ability to focus in and specialize in areas that are the best fit for them and Marathon County.</p> <p>TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY AND MARATHON COUNTY, CLICK HERE.</p> <p>Examples of Work Performed:</p> <p>The following duties are typical of this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required or assigned.</p> <ul> <li> <p>Serve as a member of the Highway Department leadership team, providing guidance and direction for construction, operations and maintenance.</p> </li><li> <p>Oversee highway and facility activities, including construction projects, emergency response, and occasionally assist with winter operations support.</p> </li><li> <p>Manage and coordinate federal and state-funded program applications and projects; including STP, LRIP, HSIP and similar programs.</p> </li><li> <p>Prepare and administer budgets, cost estimates, contracts, and purchasing activities for materials and services.</p> </li><li> <p>Ensure compliance with regulations and standards, including MUTCD standards, construction permitting, safety programs, etc.</p> </li><li> <p>Coordinate with municipalities and agencies on the Town Road Improvement Program, Municipal State Aid Improvement Program, and multi-jurisdictional projects.</p> </li><li> <p>Participate in bridge inspections, repairs, and replacement projects by assisting the Bridge Program Manager as needed.</p> </li><li> <p>Support supervisors in issuing oversize/overweight, utility, municipal, and right-of-way permits.</p> </li><li> <p>Assist with the development and implementation of department Standard Operating Procedures, training programs, and emergency preparedness.</p> </li><li> <p>Research and prepare reports and plans for projects and maintenance activity.</p> </li><li> <p>Serve as liaison with media, citizens, and officials, responding to inquiries and providing information.</p> </li><li> <p>Occasionally, fill in for supervisors as needed and assume the duties of the Highway Commissioner in their absence.</p> </li></ul> <p>Minimum Qualifications:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field; OR Associate's degree in Civil Engineering OR related field with directly related work experience.</p> </li><li> <p>Valid Wisconsin driver's license with a driving history that meets County standards.</p> </li></ul> <p>Desirable Qualifications:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Five (5) or more years of progressively responsible highway operations, maintenance, or project management experience</p> </li><li> <p>Five (5) or more years of Wisconsin DOT design and/or construction experience.</p> </li><li> <p>Bridge inspection and/or construction experience</p> </li><li> <p>Proficiency with Civil 3D software</p> </li><li> <p>Wisconsin Professional Engineer license</p> </li><li> <p>Certified Bridge Inspector</p> </li><li> <p>MUTCD Traffic Control knowledge</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to become a Certified Bridge Inspector within two (2) years of hire</p> </li></ul> <p>Underfill Opportunity:</p> <p>Candidates who possess other combinations of education and experience but may not yet meet all qualifications for the County Engineer role are encouraged to apply. Depending on qualifications, experience, knowledge, and skills, the selected candidate may be considered for hire at a lower classification and salary, with the opportunity to transition into County Engineer.</p> <p>Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Knowledge of Highway maintenance and construction principles and standards.</p> </li><li> <p>Skill in managerial practices and self-leadership.</p> </li><li> <p>Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws, codes, and regulations related to highway operations.</p> </li><li> <p>Knowledge of Budgeting, project management, procurement, and inventory systems.</p> </li><li> <p>Knowledge of Traffic control and lane closure standards (MUTCD).</p> </li><li> <p>Knowledge of Bridge program management and inspection practices.</p> </li><li> <p>Knowledge of WisDOT service and maintenance requirements.</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to work in a team environment and contribute to a positive work culture.</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to prioritize and assign work.</p> </li><li> <p>Knowledge of budget preparation, monitoring, and long-range financial planning.</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to develop, implement, and enforce policies, procedures, and safety standards.</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with staff, officials, media, and the public.</p> </li><li> <p>Skill in using computers, engineering software, and IT systems related to highway operations.</p> </li></ul> <p>Compensation:</p> <p>Starting annual salary: $101,420.80 + Marathon County benefits</p> <p>Physical Requirements:</p> <p>Moderate Physical Requirements - Job requires a combination of desk work and some physical activity.</p> <p>All physical requirements are described with the intent to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
