<p>This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits , competitive salaries and many career development opportunities.</p> <p>This position will function as a Transportation Worker II in the North Wake County Maintenance Unit located in Bunn, NC. Employee will report to the Franklin County Maintenance office but will perform work in Wake County. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance, repair and construction of state-maintained roads and roadside features. Work to include, but not limited to, installation of traffic & erosion control devices, clearing of right of way, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed. Emergency response includes traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, hurricane cleanup and other emergencies as they occur. Employee will operate various pieces of equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, forklift, front end loader, tractor trailer, motor grader, roller, and additional pieces of heavy equipment as needed. Employee will perform flagging operations to safely guide traffic through work zones and perform manual labor for extended periods of time. Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc., and emergency response, which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. Position is subject to emergency call back. Employee will be subject to outside extreme environmental conditions, in addition to hazards at highway construction sites, including heavy equipment and highway traffic. May perform variety of other assigned duties. Safety toe shoes required.</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge of Basic Work Safety and Traffic Control </li><li>Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching </li><li>Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, forklift, force feed loader, front end loader, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, or tractor "A" boom. </li></ul> <p>Additional Expectations:</p> <p>Working knowledge of the principles involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. Manual labor includes, but is not limited to operating chain saws, shoveling, driving trucks and litter pickup. Must be able to operate the minimum amount of equipment required in the preceding level. Employees at this level may train on and operate equipment associated with the specialist level for a small percentage of time. Work may include lifting up to 50lbs repeatedly. Must have the ability to climb, bend, transverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. Employee will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with N endorsement.</p> <p>Must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver's License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of an on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.</p> <ul> <li>Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation. </li></ul> <p>Some state job postings say you can qualify by an "equivalent combination of education and experience." If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both.
