<p>JOB DESCRIPTION:</p> <p>The Newberry College Department of Music invites applications for an Adjunct Faculty member in Jazz Studies beginning in the Fall of 2026. This position is responsible for directing the Jazz Big Band and teaching jazz-related courses such as Jazz Theory & Arranging and Improvisation. Additional teaching opportunities may be available depending on the candidate's areas of expertise and departmental needs. The successful candidate will work closely with the Director of Bands within the instrumental area and contribute to the artistic and educational growth of the college's jazz program. The ideal candidate will understand the unique opportunities and challenges of a small college environment and will be resourceful, flexible, and proactive in supporting a growing jazz and instrumental program.</p> <p>JOB FUNCTIONS:</p> <ol> <li> <p>Direct the Newberry College Jazz Big Band, including rehearsal planning, repertoire selection, and performances.</p> </li><li> <p>Teach jazz-related courses, which may include Jazz Theory & Arranging, Improvisation, and other courses aligned with the candidate's expertise.</p> </li><li> <p>Work effectively with both music majors and non-music majors in classroom and ensemble settings.</p> </li><li> <p>Collaborate closely with the Director of Bands and other faculty within the Department of Music.</p> </li><li> <p>Assist in coordinating and hosting the annual Newberry Jazz Festival in the spring semester in partnership with the Director of Bands, and in collaboration with the South Carolina Band Directors Association. Responsibilities include coordinating logistics, working with participating schools/ensembles, and inviting and hosting a guest artist for the Newberry Jazz Big Band's featured performance at the event.</p> </li><li> <p>Support recruitment, retention, and engagement efforts related to jazz and instrumental music programs at Newberry College.</p> </li><li> <p>Perform other related duties, as assigned by the Chair, Department of Music.</p> </li></ol> <p>EDUCATIONAL OR OTHER HIRING REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION</p> <p>Master's degree or higher in Jazz Studies, Music, or a closely related field (or equivalent professional experience). Experience directing high school and/or collegiate jazz ensembles and working with diverse</p> <p>student populations. Demonstrated expertise in jazz performance, pedagogy, and direction of large jazz ensembles. Extensive knowledge of jazz repertoire spanning multiple styles, eras, and traditions. Strong</p> <p>collaborative skills and the ability to work effectively within a faculty team.
