We encourage those who join us to be active participants in building our future.</p> <p>Position Summary</p> <p>We are seeking a Head of Model Development and Technology to join our actuarial team and play a central role in the transformation and ongoing development of Bowhead's pricing models onto a modern, scalable technology platform. This is a hands-on technical role that sits at the intersection of actuarial science and software engineering - you'll be building production-grade rating tools that directly support our underwriters across all three divisions: Casualty, Professional Liability, and Healthcare Liability. This role is critical to that transformation and to enabling more advanced loss modeling, improved efficiency, and deeper analytical capability across the actuarial team. The position reports to the Chief Actuary.</p> <p>Key Responsibilities</p> <ul> <li>Own end-to-end model delivery, from scoping and build through testing, iteration, and deployment of Bowhead's actuarial rating tools across Casualty, Professional Liability, and Healthcare lines of business. </li><li>Collaborate directly with underwriters and actuaries to translate pricing methodologies - including manual rating, loss rating, and simulation models - into product-grade Python models. </li><li>Support actuarial pricing studies and analyses by building tools that leverage captured risk characteristics and loss data. </li><li>Mentor and support junior model developers. </li><li>Continuously improve our model development standards, tooling, and ways of working as Bowhead scales. </li></ul> <p>Skills and Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>Shipped and maintained production-grade Python code in complex, data-heavy environments - ideally in insurance, reinsurance, or financial services. </li><li>Experience with SDLC and model development from Mapping, Normalization, Validation, and optimization. </li><li>Demonstrated experience designing, monitoring, and documenting statistical models with robust model drift detection, explainability, and end-to-end auditability suitable for regulated environments. </li><li>Strong understanding of P&C actuarial concepts such as loss development, loss rating, increased limit factors, credibility, rate change, and knowledge of excess/surplus lines pricing. </li><li>Experience translating actuarial or analytical methodologies into software, with the ability to take a pricing approach from a spreadsheet and build it into a scalable, maintainable model. </li><li>Taken ownership of ambiguous problems, creating structure and driving them through to high-quality outcomes. </li><li>Worked directly with non-technical stakeholders (underwriters, claims, senior management), translating business requirements into robust technical solutions. </li><li>Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. </li><li>Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. </li><li>Advanced proficiency in Python, Databases and system integrations. Working knowledge of R and Git/GitLab. </li></ul>
