In this role, you'll play a key part in supporting the child support process by reviewing cases, facilitating mediation, and helping parties reach fair and compliant outcomes. Have one (1) year of full-time work experience as a para-legal or legal assistant; OR</p> </li></ol> <p>b. Have one (1) year of full-time work experience in a social service agency or related field, in a professional or para-professional capacity.</p> <p>NOTE: A Bachelors Degree in law, social science, human services or a closely related field may be substituted for Para-Legal or Legal Assistant Certificate.</p> <ol start="3"> <li> <p>Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical, established for this class.</p> </li><li> <p>Successfully complete the six month probationary period.</p> </li></ol> <p>ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES</p> <p>WITHIN THE GENERAL CLASS</p> <p>Responds to requests to modify child support orders. Determines jurisdiction, gathers, verifies and evaluates parties' financial information including wage and tax return records, and utilizes the Michigan Child support formula to produce a recommendation regarding appropriate child support levels.</p> <p>Schedules and conducts mediation conferences between parties and/or their attorneys to attempt to reach a mutually agreeable modification of support. Drafts any resulting consent orders.</p> <p>Reviews Friend of the Court case records to determine if there is a need for enforcement of support orders. Researches case information, determines appropriate enforcement strategy, and initiates action such as notice of arrearage, show cause hearing, garnishment, lien on property, and professional or driver's license suspension.</p> <p>Pursues child support collection efforts such as income tax refund intercepts and workers compensation intercepts where appropriate.</p> <p>Answers questions and provides information regarding child support issues to the general public, attorneys, and other county, state and federal agencies.</p> <p>Receives and responds to mail. Determines the appropriate responses and dictates letters and/or memos or reroutes mail to other persons with appropriate instructions as necessary.</p> <p>Researches legal issues as needed.</p> <p>Utilizes current county-wide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.</p> <p>WITHIN THE MEDICAL SUPPORT AREA</p> <p>Responds to requests from clients to interpret and clarify appropriate amounts of medical support to be</p> <p>provided based upon court order stipulations.</p> <p>Responds to requests to establish or modify medical support orders. Determines jurisdiction, gathers, verifies</p> <p>and evaluates parties' financial information including wage and tax return records, and uses the Michigan Child</p> <p>support formula to produce a recommendation regarding appropriate medical support levels or responsibility</p> <p>for coverage.</p> <p>Reviews court orders, medical bills and insurance coverage statements to determine if court orders are being</p> <p>followed regarding medical support for dependent children.</p> <p>Notifies parties of non-compliance and provides due dates by which further action will be taken if payments</p> <p>are not received.</p> <p>Schedules and conducts pre-hearing conferences between parties to attempt to reach a settlement prior to a</p> <p>Show Cause Hearing and drafts any resulting consent orders.</p> <p>Attends Show Cause Hearings and presents case information and recommendation to the Referee.</p> <p>Answers questions and provides information regarding medical support issues to the general public, attorneys,</p> <p>and other county, state and federal agencies.</p> <p>Utilizes current county-wide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.</p> <p>WITHIN THE INTERSTATE AREA</p> <p>Responds to requests to modify and/or enforce interstate child support orders between the State of Michigan</p> <p>and other states. Determines which state has primary jurisdiction and the controlling court order to pay child</p> <p>support when more than one court order has been issued.</p> <p>Receives, reviews, evaluates and registers documentation to establish an interstate child support order within</p> <p>the State of Michigan and outside the State of Michigan.</p> <p>Gathers, verifies and evaluates parties' financial information including wage and tax return records, and</p> <p>determines the appropriate amount of child support based upon guidelines of the state with primary</p> <p>jurisdiction.</p> <p>Reviews Friend of the Court case records to determine if there is a need for enforcement of support orders.</p> <p>Researches case information, determines appropriate enforcement strategy, and initiates action such as notice</p> <p>of arrearage, show cause hearing, garnishment, lien on property, and professional or driver's license</p> <p>suspension.</p> <p>Schedules and participates in mediation conferences between parties and/or their attorneys to attempt to reach a</p> <p>mutually agreeable modification of support.
