Click here to learn more about the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor.</p> <p>Role Overview:</p> <p>The Deputy Consumer Counselor provides skilled legal representation on behalf of Indiana ratepayers. This role primarily involves practicing before the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC), with occasional matters arising before other regulatory agencies and state or federal courts. The position requires managing complex, highly specialized regulatory litigation and presenting evidence in IURC hearings. The Deputy Consumer Counselor will work closely with in-house technical analysts who assist in developing and supporting expert testimony and other case evidence.</p> <p>The Senior Deputy Consumer Counselor reports directly to the Chief Deputy Consumer Counselor and performs duties with minimal supervision. This position requires the ability to:</p> <ul> <li>Demonstrate strong self-motivation, discipline, and initiative. </li><li>Effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously. </li><li>Handle a diverse and demanding caseload efficiently and within required timelines. </li></ul> <p>Salary:</p> <p>This is a senior level position with a starting salary of $88,661. Salary may be commensurate with education and experience. An underfill will be considered for candidates without untility regulatory expereince and who will commit to training and mentoring. The underfill salary starts at $83,097 and will be adjusted with experience.</p> <p>Use our Compensation Calculator to view the total compensation package.</p> <p>A Day in the Life:</p> <p>Essential duties:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Advocate and represent the interests of ratepayers in utility proceedings (trials) usually before the IURC.</p> </li><li> <p>Prepare and present witnesses and exhibits in evidentiary hearings</p> </li><li> <p>Conduct discovery.</p> </li><li> <p>Draft legal pleadings, trial, and appellate briefs, motions and proposed orders</p> </li><li> <p>Cross examine witnesses from utilities or other interested parties.</p> </li><li> <p>Participate in settlement negotiations.</p> </li><li> <p>Work closely with technical staff assigned to case.</p> </li><li> <p>Work closely with Leadership to develop and carry out Agency policy.</p> </li></ul> <p>Related responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li>Contribute to achieving overall Agency and Division goals. </li><li>Identify and learn current utility regulatory practices. </li><li>Draft and edit testimonies. </li><li>Participate in occasional IURC field hearings at various locations throughout the state. </li><li>Remain current on utility issues by reviewing orders from the IURC, FERC, Indiana Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, and other utility jurisdictions, as well as reviewing utility periodicals. </li><li>Attend continuing legal and technical seminars and conferences. </li><li>Analyze proposed legislation. </li><li>Assist the External Affairs Director in drafting accurate press releases. </li><li>Engage in continuous personal and professional development. </li></ul> <p>The job profile is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities that are required of the employee.
