<p>Job Title: Part Time History Educator</p> <p>Rate: $18.00 per hour</p> <p>Dauphin County Parks & Recreation is currently accepting applications for the position of Part Time History Educator. The overall objective of the employee in this position is to help develop history education and event programming for the County Parks system and to assist with coordinating and staffing events and programs. This employee is also responsible for performing the following essential functions listed below:</p> <p>ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Helps prepare and present history education and recreation programs to private and public schools, home schools, colleges, community-based organizations, teachers, and the general public.</p> </li><li> <p>Assists in the administration and management of Fort Hunter Mansion and large-scale events, including conducting tours and acting as liaison with exhibitors, vendors, and volunteers.</p> </li><li> <p>Acts as a liaison with educational institutions including schools, districts, colleges, universities, service organizations, private/parochial schools, educators, and other educational resources and advocates.</p> </li><li> <p>Assists in recruiting and training volunteers and fosters active support by the general public for the facilities and history education.</p> </li><li> <p>Assists in developing use of technology, interpretive displays including exhibits, illustrated lectures, signs, virtual content, recordings, and other related presentation and engagement materials at the Mansion and throughout the park system.</p> </li><li> <p>Collaborates with and supervises volunteers and community groups; organizes and deploys same in projects of research, presentation, preservation, and upkeep of the parks.</p> </li><li> <p>Helps develop calendar of events for history education and recreation activities.</p> </li><li> <p>Undertakes historical research in the planning of programs.</p> </li><li> <p>Helps train docents and volunteers to lead and manage groups of all ages in history education and event programming.</p> </li><li> <p>Assists Park Manager and Program Manager with researching and applying for grants or sponsorships for program funding.</p> </li><li> <p>Prepares flyers, brochures, digital and other promotional materials as needed.</p> </li><li> <p>Attends staff and event planning meetings.</p> </li><li> <p>Works a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as necessary.</p> </li><li> <p>Assists with leading and developing current park events and programs as well as introducing new events and programs</p> </li></ul> <p>OTHER DUTIES OF JOB:</p> <ul> <li>Attends meetings or training sessions as required. </li><li>Presents, sets up and cleans program spaces as needed. </li><li>Operates Park equipment and vehicles as needed to perform job duties. </li><li>Performs other job-related duties as required. </li><li>Assists with museum tasks as required, including but not limited to exhibit development, archiving, and collections maintenance. </li></ul> <p>SUPERVISION RECEIVED:</p> <ul> <li>Receives instruction/supervision from the Park Manager in regard to daily work duties and special work projects. </li></ul> <p>SUPERVISION GIVEN:</p> <ol> <li>No direct supervision; provides instruction to staff and volunteers when directing programs and events. </li></ol> <p>WORKING CONDITIONS:</p> <ul> <li>Works indoors in adequate workspace and lighting but with fluctuations in temperatures. </li><li>Works outdoors in seasonal weather conditions and exposure to outdoor dust/dirt, odors, gases and chemicals. </li><li>Occasional higher than normal indoor exposure to dust/dirt in old buildings. </li><li>Subject to call-in when problems arise or as needed. </li><li>Works in conditions of potential outbursts or disruptive behavior of general public with potential for personal physical harm. </li></ul> <p>PHYSICAL/MENTAL CONDITIONS:</p> <ul> <li>Must possess ability to record, convey and present information, explain procedures and follow instructions. </li><li>Must possess ability to lead/direct volunteers in preservation, restoration and creation of various park projects. </li><li>Must be able to sit/stand/walk intermittently for long periods throughout the workday, with occasional periods of bending, stooping, twisting, reaching and driving as needed to perform essential job duties. </li><li>Must be able to engage in medium work with occasional lifting/carrying of objects with maximum weight of fifty pounds. </li><li>Must be able to physically and mentally react in the event of a disturbance or physical outbreak. </li><li>Must be able to pay close attention to details and concentrate on work. </li></ul> <p>QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <p>A. EDUCATION/TRAINING:</p> <p>Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in American history, American studies, education, museum studies or a related field preferred.</p> <p>B. WORK EXPERIENCE:</p> <ul> <li>Two years' experience at a similar institution or in an educational field. </li></ul> <p>KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Must be able to speak and understand the English language in an understandable manner in order to carry out essential functions of job.</p> </li><li> <p>Must possess good communication and interpersonal skills.</p> </li><li> <p>Must possess initiative and strong problem-solving skills.</p> </li><li> <p>Must possess ability to function independently, have flexibility and the ability to work effectively with coworkers, staff and volunteers.</p> </li><li> <p>Must possess a valid Pennsylvania driver's license and a willingness to travel as needed to carry out essential job duties.</p> </li><li> <p>Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.</p> </li><li> <p>Must possess knowledge of local and regional educational and community-based organizations.</p> </li><li> <p>Must possess knowledge of Fort Hunter buildings and land, configurations, spaces and history.</p> </li><li> <p>Must possess skills in research and using credible sources.</p> </li><li> <p>Must possess ability to maintain required records and prepare reports as needed.</p> </li><li> <p>Must demonstrate an understanding of working with guests of all ages and abilities and a willingness to assist with coordinating and staffing large scale events as required.</p> </li><li> <p>Must possess the knowledge to create school programs that address appropriate learning levels and styles as well as the state standards for social studies.</p> </li><li> <p>Must possess the ability to plan and direct complex programs, while addressing issues regarding safety, budgeting, visitor services and marketing.</p> </li><li> <p>Must possess awareness of the need for the preservation of the site and its collections while planning programs.</p> </li><li> <p>Must possess an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, governmental officials, staff and others, and to promote public relations.</p> </li></ul> <p>Please note: Having a prior conviction does not automatically disqualify you from employment.
