<p>Class Definition</p> <p>GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To oversee and perform medical-legal postmortem examinations; and to do related work as required.</p> <p>SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the functional supervision of the Chief Medical Examiner who reviews work for satisfactory performance and conformance to existing standards.</p> <p>SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Oversee, may supervise, and review the work of technical staff (i.e. investigators and/or agent(s)) during medical-legal postmortem investigation and examinations, as assigned.</p> <p>Illustrative Examples of Work Performed</p> <p>To oversee and perform medical-legal postmortem examinations.</p> <p>To prepare and issue death certificates and prepare investigative reports and records and complete postmortem examination reports arising from cases under examination.</p> <p>To present expert testimony in various courts with respect to the manner and cause of investigated deaths.</p> <p>To do related work as required.</p> <p>Required Qualifications for Appointment</p> <p>KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES: A thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques required in the performance of medical-legal postmortem examinations and investigations; the ability to obtain and record the information needed for the adequate evaluation of deaths of medical-legal significance; the ability to communicate with police and other investigatory agencies; and related capacities and abilities.</p> <p>EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:</p> <p>Education: Graduation from a medical school of recognized standing with formal post-graduate training in Anatomic and Forensic Pathology in an ACGME accredited program; and/or meets requirements, as determined by the Chief Medical Examiner, to be equivalent.</p> <p>Experience: Employment in the field of medical-legal death investigations, including supervised examination of the scene of death and the conducting of medical- legal postmortem examinations.</p> <p>SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess licensure to practice medicine in the State of Rhode Island at the time of appointment and certification by the American Board of Pathology in the fields of Anatomic and Forensic Pathology or be eligible to be examined by the ABP for certification. Certification in Anatomic Pathology must be received within 24 months of appointment and certification in Forensic Pathology must be received with 36 months of appointment. Specific to new hires, the law requires that all employees hired after September 30, 2014 participate in direct deposit. Accordingly, any employee hired after this date will be required to participate in the direct deposit system.
