<p>Job Description:</p> <p>The New Canaan Public Schools is seeking a .5 Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing beginning in the 2025-2026 school year.</p> <p>Job Summary:</p> <p>The Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing provides specialized instruction and support to students who are deaf or hard of hearing in accordance with their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The teacher collaborates with general and special education staff, related service providers, and families to ensure student access to the curriculum and full participation in school.</p> <p>Essential Duties and Responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li>Provide direct and consultative services to students who are deaf or hard of hearing across a variety of educational settings. </li><li>Develop, implement, and monitor IEPs in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. </li><li>Use appropriate communication modes (e.g., American Sign Language, spoken English, cued speech, total communication) based on individual student needs. </li><li>Adapt curriculum and materials to accommodate auditory access and language development needs. </li><li>Assess students' academic achievement, language development, and auditory access, and provide data-driven instruction. </li><li>Serve as a liaison between the school, families, and outside agencies (e.g., audiologists, speech-language pathologists, interpreters). </li><li>Provide training and support to school staff on hearing loss, communication strategies, assistive technology, and inclusion best practices. </li><li>Monitor and troubleshoot assistive listening devices such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, and FM/DM systems. </li><li>Promote self-advocacy and communication skills among students. </li><li>Maintain accurate documentation of student progress and services provided. </li><li>Participate in planning and placement team (PPT) meetings and other collaborative team meetings. </li><li>Stay current with best practices, legal requirements, and emerging technologies related to deaf education. </li></ul> <p>Qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>Valid Connecticut State Department of Education certification in Teaching Deaf or Hard of Hearing Students (057). </li><li>Bachelor's or Master's degree in Deaf Education or a related field from an accredited program. </li><li>Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) preferred </li><li>Experience working in a public school setting. </li><li>Familiarity with inclusive practices </li></ul> <p>Skills & Abilities:</p> <ul> <li>Strong understanding of language acquisition and educational needs of students with hearing loss. </li><li>Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams. </li><li>Experience with assistive listening technology and accommodations. </li><li>Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. </li></ul> <p>Please complete the online application on our district website www.ncps-k12.org and upload a cover letter, resume, transcripts and three letters of recommendation.</p>
