If you have additional questions about the recruitment process, reach out to Hayley Newhouse at hayley.newhouse@ct.gov.</p> <p>Join the State of Connecticut and take your next career step with confidence!</p> <p>PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)</p> <p>In the Department of Transportation this class is accountable for assisting a Ferry Captain in the operation, repair and maintenance of a Connecticut State Ferry vessel.</p> <p>EXAMPLES OF DUTIES</p> <ul> <li>Ensures proper boarding and exiting of passengers and vehicles from ferry vessel under mandated state and federal safety regulations that pertain to passenger carrying vessels; </li><li>Handles mooring lines and landing aprons; </li><li>Collects tolls and makes out collection reports; </li><li>Maintains vessel, decks, approach aprons in a neat and orderly condition; </li><li>Assists Ferry Captain with monitoring of river for boats and other traffic in ferry's path; </li><li>Fuels ferry and changes oil and transmission fluid; </li><li>Ensures ramps, towers and gates are properly oiled and greased; </li><li>Assists with required repairs, replacements and maintenance to ferry vessel and equipment in order to put vessel in first class condition prior to United States Coast Guard inspections as required by federal regulations; </li><li>Operates ferry vessel on an as-needed basis; </li><li>May be assigned other duties in regular or emergency highway and/or airport maintenance; </li><li>Performs related duties as required. </li></ul> <p>KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY</p> <ul> <li> <p>Knowledge of</p> </li><li> <p>mechanical and operational aspects of ferry vessels up to 100 tons;</p> </li><li> <p>maintenance and repair of internal combustion engines;</p> </li><li> <p>tools and methods used in maintenance of marine vessels and equipment;</p> </li><li> <p>Skills</p> </li><li> <p>interpersonal skills;</p> </li><li> <p>oral and written communication skills;</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to</p> </li><li> <p>utilize computer software;</p> </li><li> <p>perform mathematical calculations.</p> </li></ul> <p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE</p> <p>Two (2) years of experience in the basic operation, repair and maintenance of marine or automotive equipment and propulsion motors.</p> <p>PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS</p> <ul> <li>Mechanical understanding or background of Vessel </li><li>Customer service experience. </li><li>General maintenance experience. </li><li>Possession of a CSG Captains License </li></ul> <p>SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS</p> <ul> <li>Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate (CPR). </li><li>Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications, including a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). </li></ul> <p>PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS</p> <ul> <li>Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness in order to perform duties. </li><li>A physical examination may be required. </li></ul> <p>WORKING CONDITIONS</p> <p>Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to extreme weather conditions, noise and fumes and risk of injury from equipment.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>AN AFFIRMATIVE ACTION/EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER</p> <p>The State of Connecticut is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer and strongly encourages the applications of women, minorities, and persons with disabilities.</p> <p>ACKNOWLEDGEMENT</p> <p>As defined by Sec. 5-196 of the Connecticut General Statutes, a job class is a position or group of positions that share general characteristics and are categorized under a single title for administrative purposes.
