<p>Administrative - Central Office - Central Office Administrator</p> <p>Job Number 3700268444</p> <p>Start Date</p> <p>Open Date 03/30/2026</p> <p>Closing Date 04/17/2026</p> <p>GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES</p> <p>This executive-level position reports directly to the Superintendent and is responsible for supervising all academic service areas, which include teaching and learning, student support services, technical and career education, programs for exceptional children, instructional technology, virtual learning, gifted education and advanced academic and academy programs. The Chief Academic Officer (CAO) serves on the Senior Leadership Team, working collaboratively with other senior leaders to support tactical and strategic planning as part of continuous improvement. The CAO is entrusted to implement any processes necessary to meet the Standards of Learning (SOL) as defined by the Virginia Department of Education as well as any state or federal education laws and mandates.</p> <p>ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS</p> <p>(These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)</p> <p>Strategic</p> <ul> <li>Provide executive leadership and strategic direction to the Superintendent for the division's instructional programs, including long-range planning and continuous improvement initiatives. </li><li>Direct the development, implementation and evaluation of instructional programs, curriculum initiatives, and professional development strategies to support student achievement and the division's strategic plan. </li><li>Participate in committee meetings responsible for developing instruction policies, curriculum standards, and related procedures. </li><li>Coordinate special projects related to instructional improvement and student achievement, as assigned by the superintendent. </li><li>Analyze instructional data and prepare reports for the Superintendent and School Board to support informed decision-making. </li></ul> <p>Operational</p> <ul> <li>Coordinate and supervise curriculum design, instructional improvement and delivery, instructional programs, school monitoring and over-all instructional program assessment. </li><li>Evaluate all instructional programs, and supervise program staff through observation, monitoring, and program assessment. </li><li>Oversee the development, preparation, and monitoring of instructional budgets, and review and approve grant proposals supporting instructional initiatives. </li></ul> <p>Leadership</p> <ul> <li>Lead and align division-wide instructional priorities, and coordinate on matters of instruction across departments and offices. </li><li>Promote and sustain collaborative relationships with parents, community groups, administrators, and other stakeholders regarding instructional programs. </li><li>Participate in zone, staff, School Board, and other operational meetings as required. Represent the division on task forces, committees, and advisory groups. </li><li>Attend School Board meetings; attend City Council meetings as needed. </li><li>Perform related work as required. </li></ul> <p>KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES</p> <p>Must have a comprehensive knowledge of and be able to articulate a clear vision for curriculum design and instructional improvement and delivery, to include understanding of general education practices, special education and 504 practices, gifted education practices, and student support services (i.e., counseling, psychology, student behavior management). Must have a comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of school administration, including school division objectives, organizational structures, and operational procedures. Must also possess comprehensive knowledge of personnel and administrative management practices and methods, including demonstrated experience with budgeting and contracting, personnel evaluation, hiring and retention, and the coordination of administrative functions across areas of responsibility. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. Must have the ability to conceptualize, initiate, monitor, and evaluate new and/or current programs in support of the division's strategic plan and objectives. Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with school officials including senior leadership, Board members, school administrators, teachers, staff, and associates.</p> <p>EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE</p> <p>Required: Master's Degree in school administration and extensive experience in school administration.</p> <p>Preferred: Additional studies in curriculum development and school administration, to include a doctorate in either area. Central office leadership experience.</p> <p>PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS</p> <p>Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public using the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Frequent sitting, grasping, fingering, repetitive motion, and reaching. Occasional walking, standing, bending, stooping, and driving. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds occasionally.
