<p>Northern Illinois University (NIU) is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Coach Men's Basketball. This is a full-time, 12-month position with benefits.</p> <p>This is a professional coaching position and all of the duties of the position must be conducted in adherence with the policies, rules and regulations of affiliated national, regional and state intercollegiate athletic associations, the Mid-American conference (or subsequent member conference) and the university.</p> <p>The mission of NIU Athletics is to enhance the University, community and region through service and engagement while developing champions in the classroom, in competition and in life. Centrally located in DeKalb, Northern Illinois University is 30 miles west of Aurora, 65 miles west of Chicago, 36 miles west of Naperville, and 45 miles southeast of Rockford.</p> <p>Position Summary</p> <p>Assist head coach in coaching student-athletes, implementation and instruction of game strategy, recruiting prospective student-athletes, monitoring student-athlete academic progress, program organization, managing travel, managing student-athlete scholarships and overseeing the discipline, conduct and image of the sport program and student-athletes of a major university sport program in conjunction with other departmental responsibilities as assigned.</p> <p>Essential Duties and Responsibilities</p> <p>Administrative - 20%</p> <ul> <li>Assist in the administration of the entire sport program, including, but not limited to creating daily and weekly practices, scheduling, game planning and implementation, recruiting, equipment management and facilities scheduling, with specific emphasis in opponent scouting reports and management of game day officiating reports. </li><li>This position, in preparation for competition, will review opposing team film and provide scouting reports to coaches and student athletes. </li></ul> <p>Coaching - 20%</p> <ul> <li>Coach student-athletes individually and in groups and demonstrate game techniques; this may manage a designated skill development area or group of positions, as assigned by the Head Coach. </li><li>Plan coaching and practice sessions in accordance with NCAA and conference regulations for specified positions. </li><li>Develop, recommend and teach game strategy and position assignments; this position will provide on-court coaching during competition. </li></ul> <p>Academic Support - 10%</p> <ul> <li>Provide an overall positive educational environment for student-athletes conducive to learning, athletic development, social growth, and prepare them for life beyond college. </li><li>In conjunction with the Student Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS) department, monitor academic progress and academic status of student-athletes, implementing corrective action plans through appropriate staff, if needed. </li><li>Assist with SAASS unit on academic progress of men's basketball student-athletes. </li></ul> <p>Marketing - 10%</p> <ul> <li>Point person for marketing and promotions, directly working with men's basketball marketing director. </li><li>Including but not limited to the coordination of student athletes pictures, video board shoots all game day needs and aiding in social media marketing. </li></ul> <p>Scouting - 10%</p> <ul> <li>Scout, identify, and establish relationships with high school, junior college, and four-year college prospective student-athletes and their parents, guardians, and/or coaches. </li><li>When recruiting prospective student-athletes, determine if they will be academically eligible according to NCAA rules by requesting transcripts and test scores. </li><li>Guide signees through the NIU application and NCAA Eligibility Center process. </li><li>Log recruiting calls, contacts and evaluations on Jump Forward. </li></ul> <p>Student Athlete Wellbeing - 10%</p> <ul> <li>Serve as the men's basketball liaison to the athletics trainer as it relates to understanding how to monitor and manage student-athletes injuries based on the athletic trainers recommendations. </li></ul> <p>Video Exchange - 10%</p> <ul> <li>Coordinate video exchange with opposing teams for countable coaches and game film exchange. </li></ul> <p>Public Relations - 5%</p> <ul> <li>Promote the university, athletic department and specific sport through community events, public speaking, fundraising and marketing. </li><li>Serve as the Community Service liaison with the SAASS department. </li><li>Coordinate the needs of the department to ensure that all student athletes are present at all events. </li><li>Plan motivational speakers and participate in donor engagements with MBB donors and fans. </li></ul> <p>Student Conduct & Other Misc. Duties - 5%</p> <ul> <li>Monitor and maintain the discipline and conduct of student-athletes to support the image and reputation of the department and university. </li><li>Responsible for the development, safety and conduct of the student-athletes within specific sport program. </li><li>Cash handling responsibilities- $5,000-$10,000 annually. </li><li>Assist with departmental needs as requested. </li></ul> <p>Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)</p> <p>N/A</p> <p>Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) (Civil Service)</p> <p>N/A</p> <p>Specialty Factors (Civil Service)</p> <p>N/A</p> <p>Preferred Qualifications (Civil Service)</p> <p>N/A</p> <p>Minimum Required Qualifications (SPS)</p> <ul> <li>Bachelor's degree. </li><li>Experience with Synergy software programs. </li><li>Minimum one (1) year (12 months) of coaching experience in basketball (experience from graduate assistantships may be counted). </li></ul> <p>Additional Requirements (SPS)</p> <ul> <li>Ability to effectively communicate through oral, written and electronic forms. </li><li>Have a thorough knowledge of NCAA, conference and institutional rules and conduct the program within the regulations. </li><li>As a staff member within the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, you are responsible for knowledge of and compliance with National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) regulations, both those general in nature and those which apply directly to your position's responsibilities. Strict adherence to all applicable governing policies, procedures, and regulations of the NCAA is required and is a condition of your employment. </li></ul> <p>Preferred Qualifications (SPS)</p> <ul> <li>Master's degree. </li><li>Experience with Sportcode software programs. </li><li>Coaching experience with a Division I, II, or III basketball program. </li><li>Former Division I, II, or III basketball student-athlete. </li></ul> <p>Physical demands/requirements</p> <ul> <li>Sitting, standing, running, walking, occasionally lifting up to 50 lbs. </li></ul>
