PhD preferred.</p> <p>The required degree must be completed by the start date.</p> <p>Experience: The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah, invites applications for a faculty position to begin August 2026. Qualifications include a Master's in physics, astronomy or related field, ability to pursue a strong and independent research agenda, and a clear commitment to both undergraduate and graduate teaching.</p> <p>We welcome applicants who strengthen or complement existing research or who introduce strategic/emerging areas of research. For more information, visit https://physics.byu.edu/department/hiring.</p> <p>Duties/Expectations: The duties for this professional faculty position fall into three categories: teaching, demonstration management and development (M&D), and citizenship. While the exact percentages may vary over time due to the needs of the department, the initial estimate is 50% teaching, 40% demonstration M&D, and 10% citizenship.</p> <p>Teaching:</p> <ul> <li>Teach undergraduate courses from among the introductory physics courses, the experimental and computational lab courses, and physical science, which are intellectually enlarging, spiritually strengthening, and character building. </li><li>Develop course materials including syllabi, lectures, discussion materials, assignments and assessments that are aligned with department and course learning outcomes and the aims of a BYU education. </li><li>Incorporate inclusive, evidence-based, and active learning strategies in course delivery that promote student growth and habits supportive of lifelong learning. </li><li>Provide academic support to students through regular office hours, feedback, and mentorship to encourage students to reach their divine potential. </li><li>Participate in course and curriculum development and assessment activities in the department. </li><li>Mentor student teaching assistants through supervision and training in course content and in facilitating effective learning strategies in recitation sections, lab sections, and large help settings. </li></ul> <p>Demonstration Management and Development:</p> <ul> <li>Develop, maintain, and repair high-impact classroom demonstrations for use in large lecture physics settings smaller physics courses and outreach. </li><li>Collaborate with faculty on selection and use of appropriate demonstrations to enhance student engagement and understanding of key physics concepts. </li><li>Train and supervise student employees in the set up and take down demonstrations for scheduled classes and to provide in-class support when needed. </li><li>Maintain an organized inventory and digital catalog of demonstrations. </li><li>Develop new demonstrations using modern tools and technology where appropriate, in collaboration with other faculty, that facilitate inclusive, evidence-based, and active learning strategies. </li><li>Ensure all equipment and demonstrations are operated safely and comply with relevant safety protocols. </li><li>Mentor student demo workers to help them learn needed skills, develop confidence, and prepare for future opportunities. </li></ul> <p>Citizenship</p> <ul> <li>Under the direction of the Department Chair, contribute to the administrative councils and committees in the department. </li><li>Contribute to the overall sense of support, belonging, and peacemaking in the department. </li><li>Participate in University committees, if requested. </li></ul> <p>Information required at the time of application - Please list the individual contact information for each of your three recommenders on the faculty application.
