<p>Job Description</p> <p>ECU Health</p> <p>About ECU Health</p> <p>ECU Health is a mission-driven, 1,708-bed academic health care system serving more than 1.4 million people in 29 eastern North Carolina counties. The not-for-profit system is comprised of 13,000 team members, nine hospitals and a physician group that encompasses over 1,100 academic and community providers practicing in over 180 primary and specialty clinics located in more than 130 locations.</p> <p>The flagship ECU Health Medical Center, a Level I Trauma Center, and ECU Health Maynard Children's Hospital serve as the primary teaching hospitals for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. ECU Health and the Brody School of Medicine share a combined academic mission to improve the health and well-being of eastern North Carolina through patient care, education and research.</p> <p>Position Summary</p> <p>The Principal Cybersecurity Architect serves as the most senior technical authority for cybersecurity architecture within the organization and reports directly to the Director of Cybersecurity. This role is responsible for driving the strategic direction and technical design of the enterprises security architecture to ensure alignment with business objectives, regulatory requirements, and evolving threat landscapes.</p> <p>As a thought leader and subject matter expert, the Principal Architect defines and governs the security architecture framework, standards, and patterns for both cloud and on-premises environments. This position partners closely with IT, Cybersecurity Engineering, Cybersecurity Operations, Cybersecurity Governance Risk & Compliance (GRC), and business units to ensure new and existing systems are securely designed, integrated, and maintained.</p> <p>The Principal Cybersecurity Architect advises executive leadership on complex technical risks, emerging technologies, and security implications of digital transformation initiatives. The role also plays a critical part in driving enterprise adoption of Zero Trust principles, secure-by-design methodologies, and architectural modernization efforts such as identity modernization, micro-segmentation, and secure cloud enablement.</p> <p>This position is expected to lead architectural reviews, threat modeling sessions, and solution design workshops across a wide range of security domains including identity and access management, network security, data protection, application security, and detection/response. The Principal Architect mentors engineers and architects throughout the organization and ensures cybersecurity is embedded as a core design principle across all IT projects and platforms.</p> <p>While this role requires strategic vision and the ability to influence at the highest levels of the organization, it remains deeply rooted in hands-on technical expertise. The Principal Cybersecurity Architect must demonstrate current, practical knowledge of enterprise technologies, cloud platforms, and security controls, not just in theory, but in execution. This role is not suited for individuals who have transitioned fully away from engineering; rather, it demands someone who can both design at the architectural level and engage directly in the technical validation of controls, protocols, and integrations when needed.</p> <p>Minimum Requirements</p> <ul> <li>High School or equivalent (or higher) is required. Masters degree is preferred. </li><li>Two or more expert-level, relevant certifications such as CISSP, OSCP, COBIT, CASP, etc. are required. </li><li>10 years of experience in a LAN / WAN environment required. </li><li>10 or more years technical experience in cyber security required. </li><li>5 or more years of experience with forensic tools, investigations, and incident response required. </li><li>Advanced knowledge of one or more of the following areas including 10 or more years of experience required: </li><li>Perimeter Access Defense, LAN / WAN routing and switching, IDS and firewall engineering. </li><li>Provides team leadership in areas of expertise. </li><li>Experience leading project teams to design and implement new solutions. </li><li>Experience working in team-oriented, collaborative environment. </li><li>Independently motivated to seek knowledge in areas pertaining to their current position </li><li>Self-educates and seeks knowledge from management of ECU Health, Information </li><li>Services environment and ECU Health operations relevant to their position. </li><li>Must maintain current knowledge, skill set, and certification (where applicable). </li></ul> <p>Other Information</p> <p>Location - Remote</p> <p>#LI-REMOTE</p> <p>#LI-MG1</p> <p>General Statement</p> <p>It is the goal of ECU Health and its entities to employ the most qualified individual who best matches the requirements for the vacant position.</p> <p>Offers of employment are subject to successful completion of all pre-employment screenings, which may include an occupational health screening, criminal record check, education, reference, and licensure verification.</p> <p>We value diversity and are proud to be an equal opportunity employer.
