<p>Position:</p> <p>Extended Term Substitute, Visual Arts Teacher, JK-5</p> <p>Available September 2025 through no later than February 2026</p> <p>Visual & Performing Arts Department/Peabody School</p> <p>Visual Arts Teacher, JK-5, at Cambridge Public Schools:</p> <p>Cambridge Public Schools is seeking an extended term substitute, full time, visual arts teacher for JK-5 at the Peabody Elementary School for the approximate dates of September 1, 2025 through no later than February 28, 2026.</p> <p>About Peabody School Community:</p> <p>The Peabody School is an inclusive community connected by a passion for the pursuit of academic excellence and a commitment to the arts. Community is an important value at the Peabody School. In addition to daily morning meetings, our monthly "All School Share" provides a vehicle for each grade level to come together and share what's happening in each classroom.</p> <p>Our weekly newsletter, The Peabody Planet, is an important communication point for our families. We are especially proud of our music programs at Peabody. Our school was the first in CPS to implement a Kodaly music program, and we embrace the Kodaly philosophy that "Music is for everyone." In addition to extra music classes during the week, students who especially love music are also welcome to join our before-school music group, The Early Bird Singers. Our annual cultural night, which takes place in October, celebrates the diversity of our community and our 4th and 5th grade Spanish offerings support our students in exploring additional languages.</p> <p>The Opportunity:</p> <p>The Peabody Elementary, in partnership with the Visual and Performing Arts Department, seeks a confident, creative, social-justice oriented, and compassionate teaching artist to lead and enhance the vision for an already vibrant arts program as an extended term substitute. The Visual Arts Extended Term Substitute will teach grades JK-5 Art classes and report both to the Principal of the School and the Director of the Visual and Performing Arts Department (VPA).</p> <p>Key Responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li>Teach visual arts classes to grades Preschool through 5th grade </li><li>Implement a rigorous and balanced standards-based art curriculum including drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics and printmaking </li><li>Demonstrate artistic skill using a wide variety of 2D and 3D media </li><li>Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners </li><li>Demonstrate flexibility and compassion, while maintaining high expectations for student achievement </li><li>Demonstrate strong classroom management skills </li><li>Employ inclusive instructional methods that motivate students to continue to pursue study in the visual arts community </li><li>Collaborate with school faculty to develop interdisciplinary curriculum and work with challenging students </li><li>Organize and participate in exhibitions of student work on and off campus </li><li>Contribute to departmental and school wide curriculum projects and other initiatives </li><li>Steward the careful use of supplies, equipment, and teaching resources </li></ul> <p>Your Skill Set:</p> <p>As the incoming ETS Visual Arts Teacher, you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>Experience leading visual arts instruction in an urban, multicultural, neurodiverse setting in preschool-5. </li><li>Culturally responsive educator with a strong sense for social justice and equity. </li><li>High degree of comfort working with colleagues to build and refine engaging, standards based learning experiences that are responsive to the needs and interests of the communities you serve. </li><li>Collaborative disposition, eager to partner with classroom teachers, VPA staff, and other team members in the district on behalf of our students and families. </li><li>Excellent classroom management skills and use appropriate authentic assessment strategies to monitor student progress. </li><li>Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners and adjust practice to meet the needs of all students. </li><li>Strong organizational skills, setting up structures that allow you to manage your own work effectively and position colleagues for success. </li><li>Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required. </li><li>Massachusetts Licensure for Art PreK-5 preferred. </li></ul> <p>How to Join Our Team:</p> <p>Please upload a resume and thoughtful cover letter, outlining how your skills, experience, and commitment to equity in education meet the qualifications of the position as well as stating how you heard about this opportunity.</p> <p>At the Cambridge Public Schools, we are committed to cultivating an environment where diverse perspectives and backgrounds are embraced, acknowledging that a team reflecting diversity of race, color, ancestry, national origin, religion, age, gender, marital/domestic partner status, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability status, and veteran status allows us to serve our communities better.
