<p>Henry Ford College presents an opportunity for a Biology Lab Associate III.</p> <p>Hours: Part-time - 30 hours/week. Standard daytime work hours are expected, but deviations may occur based on workload. Schedule changes will be determined and finalized with supervisor and may change based on departmental needs and the College's operations.</p> <p>The Biology Lab Associate III works closely with faculty to provide lab support and technical service for Biology courses. HFC currently offers courses in general biology, organismal biology, ecology, cell and molecular biology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, environmental science, and science education. This position reports directly to the Dean of the School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). This is a 12-month position. </p> <ul> <li> <p>Education: Bachelor's degree in Biology or related discipline. </p> </li><li> <p>Experience: Demonstrated experience with biology laboratory techniques; Demonstrated knowledge of standard laboratory safety protocols; Demonstrated familiarity with standard laboratory equipment and procedures. </p> </li><li> <p>Arithmetic/Mathematical Reasoning - Performs computations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division correctly; solves practical problems by choosing appropriately from a variety of mathematical techniques such as formulas and percentages.</p> </li><li> <p> Ability to perform standard laboratory calculations.</p> </li><li> <p>Computer Skills - Uses computers, software applications, databases, and automated systems to accomplish work.</p> </li><li> <p>Dependability and Reliability - Behaves consistently and predictably; is reliable, responsible and dependable in fulfilling obligations; diligently follows through on commitments and consistently meets deadlines. However, education, experience, and training that demonstrates proficiency and the ability to perform the essential duties will be evaluated for equivalency to the criterion listed below.</p> <ul> <li>Demonstrated experience with molecular biology and microbiology laboratory techniques. </li><li>Broad experience and knowledge in laboratory and field techniques. </li><li>Previous experience in laboratory prep. </li></ul> <p>Additional Unique Competencies </p> <ul> <li> <p>Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail. </p> </li><li> <p>Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the College, or organizations outside the College) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services. </p> </li><li> <p>Demonstrates a genuine interest in providing HFC students with a positive learning experience.</p> </li><li> <p>Flexibility - Is open to change and new information; adapts behavior or work methods in response to new information, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles; effectively deals with ambiguity.</p> </li><li> <p>Hazardous Materials - Knowledge of hazardous materials and waste and their uses, interactions, dangers, production, handling, storage, and disposal.</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to follow safety protocols for working with biological agents (BSL-1 {biological safety level-1} and BSL-2) and chemical hazardous materials.</p> </li><li> <p>Eye-Hand Coordination - Accurately coordinates one's eyes with one's fingers, wrists, or arms to perform job-related tasks (for example, to move, carry, or manipulate objects).</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with the body, arms, or legs.</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to walk, push, pull, kneel, stoop, and lift up to 20 - 50 lbs.</p> </li><li> <p>Manages Resources - Selects, acquires, stores, and distributes resources such as materials, equipment, or money.</p> </li><li> <p>Technical Problem Solving - Troubleshoots, diagnoses, analyzes, and identifies system malfunctions to determine the source and cause of the problem.</p> </li><li> <p>Communication - Ability to carry out verbal and written directions and to effectively communicate to HFC stakeholders. Understanding and adherence to HFC policies and procedures.</p> </li><li> <p>Ensures sufficient and appropriate supplies, equipment, media, reagents, and organisms are available for student activities at various times throughout the week. Sets up and takes down materials for student laboratory exercises. Organizes laboratory spaces and prep rooms.</p> </li><li> <p>Prepares a variety of solutions, microbiological media, cultures, and reagents for student activities. Performs standard laboratory calculations.</p> </li><li> <p>Develops and updates written protocols for the preparation of laboratory materials for student activities.</p> </li><li> <p>Provides care of living organisms including bacteria, fungi, protists, plants, and animals.</p> </li><li> <p>Safely and properly handles, stores, identifies, and disposes of infectious agents (BSL-1 and BSL-2) and chemicals. Executes standard sterilization and disinfection procedures, including autoclaving.</p> </li><li> <p>Maintains laboratory equipment in good order and facilitates services of exterior suppliers (e.g., autoclave/deionized water), including equipment repair.</p> </li><li> <p>Adheres to and enforces safety regulations established by the Biology Department and the Chemical Hygiene Officer and understands safety data sheets for laboratory reagents.</p> </li><li> <p>Utilizes Ellucian software to create purchasing requisitions for the Biology Department.
