<p>Position Summary</p> <p>Elected by members of the Wisconsin State Senate every two years, the Sergeant-at-Arms is responsible for leading an office that provides the Senate logistical support and executes all orders of the Senate connected with the police and good order of the body. The Sergeant at Arms supervises and manages a large staff of full time and part time aides (Senate Messengers) who perform a wide range of duties. This office provides staff support during committee hearings and legislative caucuses, and coordinates special events held in the State Capitol and throughout the state. In addition to carrying out a range of other duties, the Office provides the Senate administrative support by managing parking, building access, and building maintenance, and coordinating specialized mailings. Due to the historic significance of this position, the Sergeant at Arms frequently performs highly visible ceremonial duties while the Senate is in session and while the Senate and Assembly meet in joint convention. This position serves under the direction of the Senate Chief Clerk and Senate leadership.</p> <p>Salary Information</p> <p>The annual salary range for this position is $86,352 - $131,676, dependent on skills, experience, and qualifications.</p> <p>Job Details</p> <p>The ideal candidate should possess excellent interpersonal skills, as well as demonstrate an outstanding ability to communicate solutions and other information to Senators, staff, and the public. The candidate must be willing and able to work in a nonpartisan environment, and he/she should be able to operate in a professional and confidential manner while working with Senators and Senate staff in the performance of assigned duties. The candidate must possess excellent supervisory skills and be willing and able to direct and supervise a large staff of assistants. The selected candidate must be forward thinking and be able to demonstrate his/her ability to facilitate process improvements in a team setting. Preferably, he/she will also be familiar with the operation of legislative bodies and have experience providing security in a public facility.</p> <p>Special Note - The candidate selected for this position will also need to be elected by the full Senate prior to assuming the position.</p> <p>Qualifications</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge of administrative principles and practices </li><li>Knowledge of applicable word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs. </li><li>Knowledge of Wisconsin government and the legislative process. </li><li>Ability to manage and administer the Office of the Senate Sergeant at Arms in an impartial and nonpartisan manner. </li><li>Ability to maintain confidentiality in the performance of assigned duties. </li><li>Ability to supervise people and handle personnel issues. </li><li>Ability to facilitate process improvement through the use of information technology. </li><li>Ability to provide logistical support to legislative committee meetings conducted within the State Capitol and throughout the state. </li><li>Ability to ensure the security of persons and property in all Senate spaces, including the Senate Chamber, hearing rooms, and offices. </li><li>Ability to assist with other security issues related to facility access and photo identification for Senate staff. </li><li>Ability to understand and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. </li><li>Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with Senators, legislative staff, and law enforcement. </li><li>Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with legislators and the general public. </li><li>Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. </li><li>Ability to prepare correspondence, budgetary, and administrative reports. </li><li>Ability to be resourceful and act independently. </li><li>Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or concerns. </li></ul> <p>How To Apply</p> <p>We are seeking candidates who are legally authorized to work in the United States and will not require employer visa sponsorship now or in the future.
