<p>The Parks Department is hiring seasonal Program Assistant Supervisors for the Summer Special Needs Summer Camp.</p> <p>JOB SUMMARY</p> <p>This position is responsible for supervising the participants in our day camp for the special needs population. They are responsible for helping to ensure the operations of the campus, both "behind the scenes" and when working directly with Campers under Senior Staff supervision making it run smoothly and following guidelines and procedures of camp. Camp counselors plan, organize, implement, and lead age-appropriate activities for children.</p> <p>MAJOR DUTIES</p> <ul> <li>Supervise and ensure the safety and overall well-being of the children as well as part-time summer staff, being alert of the needs and/or problems of the individual and as a group </li><li>Set-up of activities for the day, including watching, monitoring, and communicating and additional special set-up, cleaning, or maintenance needs to the Recreation Supervisor </li><li>Handles all substitute requests of camp staff (finding the alternative staff as needed) while also copying or notifying Recreation Supervisor in all requests </li><li>Supervision of counselors in their planning and ensuring it includes a variety of recreational activities for the children including, but not limited to physical activities, table games, indoor group activities, crafts, and sports. Adhere to all recreation department policies and procedures as it concerns equipment and room usage </li><li>Keep all camp storage space neat and clean </li><li>Assist with the training and activities for all part-time staff the week prior to camp start, including input and creation of needed materials for training </li><li>Be familiar with and follow all Parks and Recreation policies and procedures </li><li>Prefer to be able to obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid certification </li><li>Maintains and submits accurate records. Ensure a safe counselor to camper ratio is met, purchases, incident reports, attendance, sign in and out sheets, timesheets, etc. </li><li>Keep Supervisor informed in advance of program needs or any potential special accommodations with individual staff, children, or parents </li><li>Use effective, positive interpersonal communication with fellow co-workers, participants, and parents/guardians of participants </li><li>Recognizes and helps monitor camper's dietary restrictions/ allergies and ensures that snacks are given that are appropriate </li><li>Mediates and reports any camper's disputes </li><li>Knows, enforces, and follows all safety guidelines associated with the camp program, including knowing the whereabouts of those you oversee </li><li>Maintains constant surveillance of the pool/ body of water areas </li><li>Perform other related duties as assigned </li></ul> <p>KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED</p> <ul> <li>Enjoys being in the company of children </li><li>General leadership qualities </li><li>Knowledge of varying disabilities </li><li>Able to lead employees and ensure they understand their duties </li><li>Alertness and awareness of surroundings always </li><li>Good communication skills- both oral and written </li><li>Patience and ability to not overreact </li><li>Stamina </li><li>Organizational, analyzing, decision making and problem-solving skills </li><li>Mediation skills </li><li>Ability to carry heavy loads </li><li>Ability to perform various tasks, be active during a variety of temperature conditions for prolonged period outside </li><li>Basic knowledge of city and department procedures and policies of relevant local, state, and federal laws. </li><li>Ability to multi-task </li><li>Must be personable and comfortable speaking to children, parents, staff and public of all ages and backgrounds </li><li>Have the capacity to act rationally and calmly in high stress and/or emergency situations </li><li>Should possess enthusiasm, drive, and a desire to accomplish goals and objectives </li><li>Ability to represent Parks and Recreation Department in a professional manner. </li><li>Employee must have good safety awareness and use good judgment in all aspects of this position. </li></ul> <p>SCOPE AND EFFECT</p> <p>The purpose of this position is to provide overall supervision of campers daily within the use of facilities and while offsite, during scheduled activities, to provide recreational opportunities and enjoyable experiences for camp participants. This position will be responsible for set-up/ clean up before and after each shift, and ensuring the facility is always secure. They will supervise campers to ensure their safety, and general well-being while maintaining a schedule for camp participants. accurate program records, as well as ability to demonstrate proper emergency procedures.</p> <p>PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT</p> <ul> <li>The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects. (Up to 50 lbs.) </li><li>Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time. </li><li>Must be able to assist and/or maintain camper during meltdowns. </li><li>Be able to participate in physical activity for various amounts of time. (Swimming, hikes, demonstrating game skills, etc.) </li><li>Must be able to access all areas of building or off-site locations including pool areas, closets, stairwells, locker rooms, wellness center, etc. </li></ul> <p>WORK ENVIRONMENT</p> <p>The work is typically performed indoors/outdoors at school gyms or outdoors at park facilities/pool areas. The employee may be exposed to inclement weather.</p> <p>SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: This position reports directly to the Recreation Supervisor, Director of Camp.</p> <p>SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY</p> <p>Directly supervises campers during workday. The purpose of this position is to provide overall supervision of campers daily within the use of facilities and while offsite, during scheduled activities, to provide recreational opportunities and enjoyable experiences for camp participants. This position will be responsible for set-up/ clean up before and after each shift, and ensuring the facility is always secure. They will supervise employees and campers to ensure their safety, and general well-being while maintaining a schedule for camp participants. accurate program records, as well as ability to demonstrate proper emergency procedures.</p> <p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS</p> <ul> <li>Preferred but not required: Education and experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, working with children with disabilities, and/or related field </li><li>First Aid, CPR certification </li><li>Preferably be at least 21 years of age by date of hire. </li><li>High school diploma or general education diploma (GED) required or currently working on </li><li>Ability to pass a background check and drug test </li><li>CPR/ First Aid / AED Certification preferred </li><li>Lifeguard certification helpful but not necessary </li><li>Prior experience working with children helpful </li><li>Available to work weekdays throughout summer, help assist with other events weeknights and weekends when needed (regular and reliable attendance). </li><li>Skill in oral and written communication; ability to perform basic mathematical calculations. </li><li>Prefer candidates to have prior experience working with children and/or an interest in education or recreation as a possible career goal. </li><li>Previous camp supervisory role is a plus. </li><li>Candidate should have an outgoing personality with good interpersonal skills. </li></ul> <p>FLSA Status: Seasonal Pay Grade: 3</p>
