The employee in this position collaborates with the Adult Services team to connect patrons with information, resources, ideas, and community opportunities; develops and supports engaging library programs; and helps expand the library's presence and partnerships throughout the community.</p> <p>RELATIONSHIPS:</p> <p>Reports to: Head of Adult Services</p> <p>Has regular work contact with City employees, community groups, non-profit agencies and the general public.</p> <p>Supervises: none</p> <p>To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.</p> <ul> <li>Provides responsive reference, research, readers' advisory, technology, and facilitative assistance to patrons at all points of service, including desks, telephone, email, online tools, and other assigned service methods. </li><li>Assists and instructs patrons in using library materials, digital resources, databases, technology, online services, and community information resources while supporting information literacy and digital literacy skill development. </li><li>Plans, facilitates, and evaluates adult programs, book discussions, workshops, outreach visits, and major library programs that respond to community interests and library priorities. </li><li>Collaborates with community organizations, local agencies, educational partners, and civic groups to promote library services and reduce barriers to library access. </li><li>Serves as a member of the collection team by selecting, maintaining, evaluating, and deselecting assigned adult materials based on community needs, usage data, professional review sources, and library guidelines. </li><li>Instructs, mentors, and supports Public Service Assistant IIs, staff, and volunteers in reference service, readers' advisory, technology assistance, programming, projects, and assigned service responsibilities. </li><li>Communicates and applies library policies, procedures, patron expectations, privacy requirements, and service standards clearly, consistently, respectfully, and professionally. </li><li>Serves as Person in Charge when assigned, including responding to patron concerns, facility issues, behavior situations, safety matters, emergency procedures, and staff questions according to established procedures. </li><li>Cooperates as a team member of Public Services, and other library staff to support efficient operations, consistent service standards, shared problem-solving, and positive working relationships. </li><li>Completes individual projects of similar complexity and performs other duties as assigned that support Public Services and the overall mission of Hedberg Public Library. </li><li>Follows all safety regulations, policies, and procedures; reports all unsafe conditions and acts to supervisor; reports all accidents to the supervisor immediately whenever possible; follows recognized safe work practices. </li><li>Performs other special projects and other job duties as assigned or required during regular and non-business hours. </li><li>All employees may be assigned by the City Manager or their designee to perform duties and assume responsibilities that are outside the scope of their work duties when the City Manager has declared a City disaster or the City Emergency Operations Center has been initiated. </li></ul> <p>The requirements listed below are necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.</p> <ul> <li>A Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited college or university, or current enrollment with expected graduation within 6 months. </li><li>At least one year of experience in a service-oriented field is required. </li></ul> <p>OTHER QUALIFICATIONS</p> <p>The qualifications listed below are preferred, but not required to perform the essential duties of the position. The absence of these qualifications on a candidate's application does not preclude them from consideration.</p> <ul> <li>Spanish-language proficiency or bilingual communication skills are preferred but not required. </li></ul> <p>COMPETENCIES</p> <p>For successful performance in this position, the incumbent must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors.</p> <ul> <li>Working knowledge of reference, readers' advisory, and public service practices, including effective reference interviews, patron-centered assistance, reading recommendations, and referral to appropriate library or community resources. </li><li>Working knowledge of library resources and technology, including databases, digital collections, online learning tools, public computers, mobile devices, software applications, printing, scanning, and common patron technology questions. </li><li>Working knowledge of adult programming and outreach practices, including program planning, facilitation, promotion support, accessibility considerations, community partnerships, and basic program evaluation. </li><li>General knowledge of public library adult services, including lifelong learning, community engagement, digital literacy, information literacy, inclusive service, and support for adults, seniors, and patrons with varied needs. </li><li>General knowledge of collection development principles, including selection, deselection, collection maintenance, intellectual freedom, professional review sources, community responsiveness, and use of data to guide collection decisions. </li><li>General knowledge of library operations and safety practices, including service-desk procedures, patron conduct expectations, privacy requirements, emergency procedures, incident reporting, and Person-in-Charge responsibilities. </li><li>Thorough knowledge of customer-centered public service, including welcoming, accurate, respectful, and consistent assistance in a busy public library environment. </li><li>Thorough knowledge of professional ethics for librarianship, including patron privacy, confidentiality, intellectual freedom, equitable access, viewpoint neutrality, and responsible stewardship of public resources. </li><li>Thorough knowledge of collaborative library work, including cross-department communication, mentoring staff, supporting shared service standards, solving problems constructively, and contributing to a positive workplace culture. </li></ul> <p>Skills:</p> <ul> <li>Organizational and time management skills to prioritize duties and accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority. </li><li>Exceptional communication skills, both verbally and in writing, paired with a strong customer service background, and effective interpersonal skills. </li><li>Collaboration skills to effectively work with others to achieve common goals through communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. </li><li>Instructing and training in the use of library resources and services. </li><li>Excellent time management, organizational, and prioritization skills. </li><li>High level of accuracy and attention to detail. </li><li>Intermediate level of technical proficiency skills, including computer applications and software such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat. </li></ul> <p>Abilities:</p> <ul> <li>Ability to compose routine correspondence and routine reports in a clear, concise, logical, and effective manner, utilizing proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and tone. </li><li>Ability to effectively make presentations to small and large groups of individuals, manage public speaking obligations, and successfully communicate with the general public. </li><li>Ability to make decisions according to applicable laws, regulations, established procedures, and the directives of the Library Director and Library Board. </li><li>Ability to learn and apply new technology and instruct patrons on new applications. </li><li>Ability to comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures, and report all unsafe activities or conditions to supervisor. </li></ul> <p>Behaviors:</p> <ul> <li>Establish and maintain effective relationships with City employees, Community groups, non-profit agencies and the general public. </li><li>Exhibit exceptional professionalism, tact, and decorum in all areas of work duties. </li><li>Strong ethics base built upon integrity, honesty, initiative, and respect; An individual in this position is frequently involved in sedentary work, which requires sitting for the majority of the time. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of equipment. Employee is required to use cognitive ability to reason, analyze, and verbalize thoughts and ideas. Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes, and sounds associated with job-related objects, materials or tasks.</p> <p>The employee may, on occasion, be exposed to outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and extreme cold. The employee may work near moving mechanical parts in precarious places; and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic, or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The working conditions in the office environment are comfortable.
