<p>Job Description</p> <p>The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys, is recruiting for a Safety Officer (Field Operations) in Fairbanks.</p> <p>This position is open to Alaska Residents only.</p> <p>Please check our residency definition to determine if you qualify.</p> <p>What You Will Be Doing:</p> <p>This Safety Officer position coordinates field-safety operations and equipment for the Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS). Duties include:</p> <ul> <li>Leading the division's field safety program and chairing the Field Operations Safety Committee. </li><li>Coordination of safety operations and emergency plans for individual projects. </li><li>Safety training coordination and instruction. </li><li>Management of safety and communications equipment. </li><li>Management of division vehicles, equipment, and warehouses. </li><li>Fieldwork and project support as needed. </li></ul> <p>This active safety role requires close collaboration with staff and hands-on project and personnel tracking, equipment inventory and maintenance, and in-depth knowledge of field operations using helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, boats, snow machines, and ATVs for travel. In 2024, approximately 36 division staff members spent about 575 person-days in the field on 34 distinct field projects.</p> <p>Mission and Values/Culture:</p> <p>DGGS' mission is to "determine the potential of Alaskan land for production of metals, minerals, fuels, and geothermal resources, the locations and supplies of groundwater and construction material, and the potential geologic hazards to buildings, roads, bridges, and other installations and structures" (AS 41.08.020). DGGS' work requires field operations in often remote environments with challenging weather, terrain, and access.
