<p>Utah Valley University is seeking a part-time GEAR UP Outreach Mentor to support high school seniors and first-year college students as they transition into higher education. Under the guidance of the GEAR UP Utah First Year Services Counselor, this role focuses on building one-on-one relationships with students, helping them navigate academic and personal challenges, and fostering a strong foundation for success in their first year of college.</p> <p>The Outreach Mentor serves as a positive role model and advocate, working closely with students from diverse backgrounds, as well as collaborating with college faculty and staff to meet program goals. This is an excellent opportunity for someone passionate about education, student support, and making a lasting impact in the lives of first-generation or underrepresented college students.</p> <ul> <li>Works closely with First-Year Counselor to ensure student success/retention for first year college students. Tracks and follows up with students as requested by the First-Year Counselor. Coordinates students' academic progress and attendance. </li><li>Organizes and assists with planning and providing GEAR UP academic activities. Coordinates workshops and connects students to their college campus resources. </li><li>Mentors students about good decision-making processes related to attendance, college course selection, study skills, financial aid, and college and scholarship applications. </li><li>Makes follow up calls and appointments as needed. Connect with students via email, phone, and texting platform. </li><li>Performs other job-related duties as assigned. </li></ul> <p>Graduation from an accredited institution with an associate's degree plus one year of experience related to the Summary of Duties or any combination of education and experience related to the Summary of Duties totaling three years. </p> <p>Preferred Qualifications</p> <p>Valid driver's license and transportation. Ability to speak and translate Spanish to English is highly preferred.Knowledge</p> <ul> <li> <p>Must have basic academic knowledge as a result of a completion of a high school diploma or equivalent and have sufficient college preparation to pursue a college curriculum. </p> </li><li> <p>Must have knowledge of college requirements/admissions. </p> </li><li> <p>Must have social media knowledge.</p> </li></ul> <p>Skills</p> <ul> <li>Must have good verbal and written communication skills. </li></ul> <p>Abilities</p> <ul> <li> <p>Must demonstrate the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.</p> </li><li> <p>Must demonstrate the ability to organize schedules, prioritize tasks, and follow-through on assignments. </p> </li><li> <p>Must be able to successfully interact with students with diverse cultural and academic backgrounds.</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to speak and translate Spanish to English is highly preferred.</p> </li></ul>
