<p>Job Description:</p> <p>POSITION TITLE: Phlebotomy Laboratory Technician I, Health Sciences (part-time)</p> <p>DEPARTMENT: Health Sciences and Nursing</p> <p>PRIMARY LOCATION: Fall River; other Bristol locations (Taunton, New Bedford, Attleboro) on a rotational basis</p> <p>REPORTS TO: Dean, Health Sciences or designee</p> <p>JOB DETAILS: This is a part-time position without benefits not to exceed 18.5 hours per week.</p> <p>SALARY: $27.59/hr</p> <p>STATEMENT OF DUTIES:</p> <p>The Laboratory Technician I works in the Phlebotomy, Clinical Laboratory Sciences and Medical Assisting laboratory to perform routine clinical laboratory tests; collect and prepare blood and other samples; give instructions in the use of laboratory techniques and equipment; prepare reports on laboratory findings; ensure biohazard and bloodborne pathogen safety, and perform related work as required.</p> <p>ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:</p> <ul> <li>Prepare clinical specimens and instructional materials for students' laboratory sessions. </li><li>Assist faculty in the maintenance of supplies and instructional materials for students' laboratory course components. </li><li>Maintain the cleanliness and safety of laboratory according to established standards, utilizing procedures such as but not limited to disposing of contaminants, needles, sharps, and blood; washing and sterilizing glassware, and inspecting temperature control equipment to aid in the efficient and effective performance of tests or experiments. </li><li>Assist instructor with classroom/laboratory materials management; ensure sufficient supplies and sanitation consistent with bloodborne pathogens protections. </li><li>Monitor quality assurance and safety practices in the student laboratory and recommend corrective action when necessary. </li><li>Maintain documentation and records of laboratory safety practices. </li><li>Demonstrate a sense of professionalism and consistently reflect Bristol's core values while interacting with members of the Bristol community. </li><li>Focus on the Commonwealth's Equity Agenda by applying related best practices throughout all job functions. </li><li>Perform other duties as assigned. </li></ul> <p>Requirements:</p> <p>REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <p>NOTE: Unless otherwise noted, all required qualifications must be met by date of hire.</p> <p>Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional phlebotomy experience in a recognized clinical, medical, or hospital laboratory.</p> <p>Substitutions:</p> <p>I. An Associate degree or higher with a major in clinical laboratory science, may be substituted for the required experience.</p> <p>II. The successful completion of one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, education toward a degree at a recognized medical school may be substituted for the required experience.</p> <p>III. The successful completion of training in a recognized school or hospital course or an American Medical Association (AMA) approved training program for laboratory technicians or medical technologists may be substituted for the required experience.</p> <p>IV. Registration as a medical technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the International Society for Clinical Laboratory Technicians or American Medical Technologists or as a bacteriologist by the National Registry of Microbiologists may be substituted for the required experience.</p> <p>ADDITIONAL REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <p>Reliable transportation in order to travel to and from meetings, trainings, or campus and community locations as required.</p> <p>Knowledge of:</p> <ul> <li>General laboratory testing techniques and methods, including sample collection. </li><li>Sanitation and sterilization methods, techniques and procedures followed in a laboratory. </li><li>Proper methods used in the disposal of laboratory materials. </li><li>Techniques used in the handling and transportation of laboratory specimens. </li></ul> <p>Demonstrated ability to:</p> <ul> <li>Follow oral and written instructions. </li><li>Gather information through observing and questioning individuals and by examining records and documents. </li><li>Maintain accurate records. </li><li>Communicate effectively in oral expression and in writing. </li><li>Establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others. </li><li>Deal tactfully with others. </li><li>Exercise sound judgment. </li><li>Work in a team setting. </li><li>Distinguish colors visually. </li></ul> <p>PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <ul> <li>Minimum of an Associate degree in Clinical Laboratory Science. </li><li>Current Certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology in either Clinical Laboratory Science or Phlebotomy. </li><li>Ability to communicate in a language in addition to English, with a preference for Portuguese or Spanish. </li></ul> <p>PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:</p> <p>The employee must meet the physical demands and work environment of the position.
