About the Job

Job Duties:

A Research Professional 1- Life Sciences position is available in the Bold Lab, Division of Infectious Diseases and International Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School.

The Division of Infectious Diseases and International Medicine seeks an enthusiastic candidate with a passion for biomedical science and human health to join a newly founded research group. The overall focus of our research is to improve understanding of the key mechanisms of antigenicity and protective immunity in tuberculosis (TB). We are striving to define the critical determinants of adaptive immunity to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterial pathogen responsible for TB, the most common infectious cause of death in the world. Using innovative techniques in mycobacterial genetics and cellular immunology, we aim to better characterize mammalian adaptive immune responses in this devastating infection. Our goal is to advance the ongoing effort to develop an effective new vaccine against TB.

The position is full time (40 hours per week) with benefits, and is available with a desired start date of September 1, 2025.

75% - Research Primary duties and responsibilities will include studies of Mycobacterium tuberculosis pathogenesis and cellular immunology.

Projects include development of genetic tools for gene targeted and high throughput genomic assays in the mouse model of TB. This will include basic techniques in molecular biology and cloning.

Research focus will include immunologic studies of the mouse model of tuberculosis, and will involve the opportunity to assist in the biosafety level 3 laboratory, with infection of mice and processing of mouse tissues.

Other techniques involved will include bacterial and mammalian cell culture, flow cytometry, and fluorescence microscopy.

The overall focus of our research is to improve understanding of the key mechanistic determinants of antigenicity and protective immunity in TB.

25% - Administrative tasks

Management of the lab inventory and day to day orders

Maintenance of biosafety procedures and administrative records

Maintenance of a mouse colony

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: (Must be documented on all application materials)

BA/BS degree, or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least four (4) years

General experience in basic bench laboratory biological research techniques

Excellent communication and organizational skills

Proficiency in written and verbal communication skills

Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

Desire to contribute to a team environment

Ability to work independently, problem-solve, and multi-task

Preferred Qualifications:

BA/BS degree in biological science preferred

Capacity for supervisory experience - potential to oversee undergraduate researchers Targeted experience in molecular biology methods, including E. coli culture, cloning, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and analysis of Sanger DNA sequencing results

Targeted experience in basic immunological methods, such as ELISA and western blotting

Experience with or willingness to learn mammalian tissue culture, flow cytometry, mouse care and breeding, and both BSL-2, as well as BSL-3 technical skills including work with pathogenic Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: Starting pay is $20.20 to $30.87 per hour ($42,016 - $64,209 annually), depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment Category: 75%-100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.)

Position Type: Civil-Service & Non-Faculty Labor Represented Staff

Please visit the Office of Human Resources website for more information regarding benefit eligibility.

The University offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes:

Competitive wages, paid holidays, and generous time off

Continuous learning opportunities through professional training and degree-seeking programs supported by the Regents Tuition Benefit Program

Low-cost medical, dental, and pharmacy plans

Healthcare and dependent care flexible spending accounts

University HSA contributions

Disability and employer-paid life insurance

Employee wellbeing program

Excellent retirement plans with employer contribution

Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) opportunity

Financial counseling services

Employee Assistance Program with eight sessions of counseling at no cost

Employee Transit Pass with free or reduced rates in the Twin Cities metro area

How To Apply

Applications must be submitted online.
