<p>The Town of Brookline seeks a mission-driven Preservation Planner to help protect and celebrate our historic character while guiding thoughtful growth. This is a unique opportunity for a preservation professional who is passionate about architecture, cultural resources, and public service.</p> <p>In this role, you will administer the Towns Local Historic Districts, Neighborhood Conservation Districts, and Demolition Delay By-law, reviewing renovation and demolition requests, preparing public hearing materials, and providing expert guidance to residents, property owners, developers, and Town departments. Youll serve as a key liaison to the Preservation Commission, support public education efforts such as walking tours and publications, and help secure funding through grants and technical documentation.</p> <p>This position blends planning, policy administration, research, and community engagement, ideal for someone who thrives in both fieldwork and public meetings, and who enjoys balancing regulatory review with proactive stewardship.</p> <p>Key Responsibilities:</p> <ul> <li>Review and process applications for exterior renovations and demolitions within Local Historic Districts and NCDs </li><li>Prepare materials and reports for Preservation Commission public hearings </li><li>Work with applicants, property owners, and Town departments to develop alternatives to demolition </li><li>Conduct site visits and evaluate the architectural and historical significance of structures </li><li>Maintain Certified Local Government (CLG) status and required records </li><li>Assist with eligibility determinations for National Register listings and environmental reviews </li><li>Provide technical assistance to staff and public on preservation best practices </li><li>Research, write, and support grants and special projects </li><li>Develop educational programming, such as historic walking tours and publications </li><li>Serve as staff to the Preservation Commission, including meeting organization and minutes </li></ul> <p>Qualifications:</p> <p>Bachelors degree and two years of experience in historic preservation or closely related field; Masters degree highly desirable; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Working knowledge of state and federal regulations pertaining to historic preservation, architectural history, and the cultural and landscape resources of historic preservation planning. Ability to interpret architectural plans, assess building significance, and communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders; strong organizational, writing, and public presentation skills</p> <p>Special Requirements:</p> <p>A valid motor vehicle operators license</p> <p>Salary Range: $78,713 - $89,060 and excellent benefits.</p> <p>Apply Today - Candidates who apply by July 1, 2026 will receive priority consideration.</p>
