<p> </p> <p> Classification Counselor 3 </p> <p> Washington State Penitentiary (WSP)</p> <p>The Department of Corrections is seeking highly motivated and qualified individuals to fill a Full Time Permanent Classification Counselor 3 position at Washington State Penitentiary (WSP).</p> <p> </p> <p>Note: This recruitment may be used to fill future permanent vacancies that may occur</p> <p> </p> <p>The Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the position of Classification Counselor 3 for the Washington State Penitentiary.</p> <p>The Washington State Penitentiary is staffed 24-hours a day, 7 days a week.</p> <p>Whether the work is inside a prison, in community corrections, or in an administrative office, the Washington State Department of Corrections professional staff experience a high degree of personal satisfaction knowing they are creating environments in which all offenders can learn to make choices that contribute to a safer society.</p> <p>The Department of Corrections (DOC), as a partner in the criminal justice system, enhances public safety, administers criminal sanctions and programs in accordance with the law and provides leadership for the future of corrections in Washington State.</p> <p>The Washington State Penitentiary (WSP) is comprised of 4 Close Custody Units, 3 Special Housing Units, 2 Intensive Management Units, 2 Medium Units, 2 Minimum Housing Units and a Hospital. In all, WSP houses approximately 2,100 incarcerated individuals and employs approximately 1,100 staff.</p> <p>DOC is an organization that respects individuals for their unique qualities and strives to create a safe environment for individual uniqueness.</p> <p>A completed application packet will include:</p> <ul> <li>A detailed resume </li><li>A cover letter regarding your interest for this position with our agency </li><li>Three professional references </li></ul> <p> </p> <p>The primary duties for the Classification Counselor 3 (CC3) will act as principal assistant to unit manager, manage a caseload of adult criminal incarcerated individuals, provide effective communication and documentation, navigate and maintain multiple electronic technologies and hard copy files, and perform other duties as assigned and/or required. Essential functions for the CC3 include:</p> <ul> <li>As a lead or supervisor, provide guidance and technical expertise to other staff. May supervise one (1) to four (4) Classification Counselor 2's. </li><li>Assume delegated responsibilities of unit supervisor in his/her absence. </li><li>Mentor, train, monitor, and audit the work of subordinate and/or other lower level staff. </li><li>Assign and evaluate work. </li><li>Handle complex and non-routine caseloads. </li><li>Investigate all information available for each arriving incarcerated individual, and determine the incarcerated individual's documentation and programming needs. </li><li>Complete facility plans, criminal history and risk management tools to determine needs. </li><li>Prepare and submit Incarcerated Individual Release Plan. </li><li>Counsel and inform incarcerated individuals regarding community resources and problems. </li><li>Work with internal and external entities to facilitate incarcerated individual re-entry. </li><li>Maintain communication with incarcerated individuals to assist with attorney calls, child custody/support hearings with DCYF and courts, and family contact through crisis/emergency situations. </li><li>Regularly review and update incarcerated individual plans and programming needs. </li><li>Monitor incarcerated individual programming and behaviors. </li><li>Write correspondences, infractions, and incident reports. </li><li>Provide clear, concise, and consistent communication with staff, incarcerated individuals and stakeholders. </li><li>Complete paperwork for special visits, death bed visits, funeral outings, job referrals, End of Sentence Review packets, Extended Family Visits, marriages, psychological evaluation requests, incarcerated individual to incarcerated individual correspondence, and out of state and international transfers. </li><li>Provide monthly reports and participate in meetings. </li><li>Testify before courts, boards and classification or disciplinary hearings. </li><li>Record, access, update, and retrieve incarcerated individual-related information from agency data base. </li><li>Perform essential audits and investigations. </li></ul> <p>Skills and Abilities:</p> <ul> <li>Write clearly, factually, and concisely. </li><li>Analyze and interpret data, weigh the risks, and make decisions or recommendations to address staff and incarcerated individual needs. </li><li>Identify and address incarcerated individual behavior/needs. </li><li>Organize and prioritize work. </li><li>Apply conflict resolution skills. </li></ul> <p>Required qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>Six years of experience in adult corrections*, juvenile corrections, rehabilitation, or social casework. </li></ul> <p> OR </p> <p> </p> <ul> <li>Satisfactory completion of two (2) years of college-level credit classes (60 semester or 90 quarter credits) AND four (4) years of experience in adult corrections*, juvenile corrections, rehabilitation, or social casework. </li></ul> <p>OR</p> <ul> <li>One (1) year as a Classification Counselor 2 in Washington State service to include, at a minimum, satisfactory completion of two (2) years of college-level credit classes (60 semester or 90 quarter credits.) </li></ul> <p>Preferred/Desired qualifications:</p> <ul> <li>A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) AND two (2) years juvenile or adult corrections experience* in treatment, custody or community corrections or professional counseling or casework experience. </li></ul> <p> *Note: Corrections experience is defined as the focus of the work is supervising or counseling incarcerated individuals a majority of the time.</p> <p> </p> <p> Note: The Washington State Department of Corrections defines college-level credits as 100 level and above classes.</p> <p> </p> <p>'Supplemental Information</p> <p>'The mission of DOC is Improving public safety by positively changing lives'</p> <p> </p> <p>For additional information about the agency, please visit doc.wa.gov.</p> <p> </p> <p>IMPORTANT NOTES:</p> <p> </p> <ul> <li>Please include a minimum of three professional references with your application.
