<p>Position Summary</p> <p>Revenue Auditors fill a variety of roles and are assigned to work with specific tax areas: Sales/Use, Corporation, Excise, Individual Income, Income Reconstruction, Nexus, and Pass-Through Entities (Partnerships and S-Corporations). Assignment to each specific role or tax area will be based on agency needs.</p> <p>Return Auditors examine tax returns, correspond with taxpayers for additional information, and prepare audit work papers and reports from an office location. Little to no travel is required for Return auditor positions.</p> <p>Books & Records Auditors conduct audits of individuals and a variety of business entities independently and may assist higher level auditors in performing large, complex audits. Many audits are initiated and conducted at the taxpayer's business location.</p> <p>Salary Information</p> <p>The starting pay rate for these positions is $29.05 per hour, plus benefits.</p> <p>With satisfactory performance, employees in these positions may be eligible for two $1.50/hour salary increases the pay period following the employee's seniority (anniversary) date; generally at 12 months and again at 24 months of employment for new state employees.</p> <p>Employees who have an active license as a certified public accountant in Wisconsin, or another state may may be eligible for an additional add-on of $1 per hour.</p> <p>Auditor positions also have regular advancement and salary progression opportunities.</p> <p>The classification of these positions is Revenue Auditor 1, which is in Pay Schedule 07, Pay Range 04. Pay will be set in accordance with the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan in effect at the time of hire. Starting pay for current state employees may vary based on applicable provisions in the Compensation Plan.</p> <p>Job Details</p> <p>Mandatory New Employee Orientation: These auditor positions will be required to report to our Madison Headquarters office on Wednesday, July 8, 2026 for one day of in-person New Employee Orientation (NEO) training.</p> <p>Mandatory Training: These auditor positions will be required to complete approximately six months of in-person and remote training which will take place at each employee's assigned, primary office location and at our Appleton, Madison, or Milwaukee offices. Travel reimbursement will be provided consistent with State of Wisconsin travel guidelines. Successful completion of this training is required and there is limited availability to use leave during this time.</p> <p>Background Checks: Due to the nature of this position, final candidates will be subject to criminal background, fingerprint, and tax compliance checks.</p> <p>I-9 Requirements: Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship) at the time of appointment. The Department of Revenue does not sponsor work or student visas and is not an eligible OPT employer for those with F1 visas. DOR participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with Form I-9 information for all new employees to confirm authorization to work in the U.S.</p> <p>Probationary Period: A 24-month probationary period will be required.</p> <p>Remote Work/Telework up to 60%: These positions have the opportunity to gradually increase remote work up to 60%, based on performance and work unit needs, after completion of the first 12 months of the probationary period. Remote work is intended to be performed primarily in the State of Wisconsin and is subject to change based on business needs.</p> <p>Travel: Books and Records positions require occasional travel with some overnight stays. A valid driver's license and ability to use a personal vehicle for travel is required. Reimbursement of travel expenses is available consistent with State of Wisconsin travel guidelines.</p> <p>Qualifications</p> <p>Minimally qualified applicants will have all the following:</p> <ul> <li> <p>Bachelor's or advanced degree in accounting or taxation from an accredited institution by the time of appointment* (June 1st or 15th, 2026) or a combination of coursework and work experience (e.g., professional experience auditing accounting records and/or procedures, using generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and generally accepted auditing standards (GAAS)).</p> </li><li> <p>*If your degree is in progress, please include your anticipated completion date in your application material.</p> </li><li> <p>View these materials for more information regarding the qualification.</p> </li><li> <p>Experience using Microsoft Office software (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook) for data analysis, email correspondence, etc.</p> </li><li> <p>Experience working in a customer service role</p> </li></ul> <p>Well-qualified applicants will have at least one of the following:</p> <ul> <li>Professional experience researching and applying Federal or Wisconsin tax laws and administrative codes </li><li>Hold an active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license </li><li>Hold an active Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) certification </li></ul> <p>Effective verbal, written communication, and Excel technical skills will be evaluated at a later stage in the selection process.</p> <p>How To Apply</p> <p>Applying is easy!
