The Behavior Intervention Specialist helps coordinate Functional Assessments of Behavior and Behavior Intervention Plans that address students' inappropriate behaviors and states of dysregulation and provides a means to help the students become more academically successful. The Behavior Intervention Specialist also provides classroom and school-wide behavior management strategies and trauma informed care. The Behavior Intervention Specialist provides leadership and direction at the school and district level, working to design, implement, coordinate and evaluate a comprehensive behavior support program. In addition, the Behavior Intervention Specialist works directly with identified students to learn replacement behaviors and utilize help and/or calming strategies that substantially improves their sense of well-being and increase their academic performance. Under the supervision of Student Services, the Behavior Intervention Specialist will provide diversified preventative and intervention strategies and activities specifically designed for targeted students and for students in crisis.</p> <p>DISTRICT OVERVIEW</p> <p>Livonia Public Schools employs approximately 1,800 staff members, serving approximately 13,200 students pre-K - post secondary. There are 15 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools, 1 career technical center, 1 early childhood center and 1 vocational and transition center in the School District. The annual budget for Livonia Public Schools is $175 million, with a state funding of $9,608 per pupil.</p> <p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <p>The following is a list of minimum qualifications for this position, any one of which may be waived by the Administration in exercising its prerogative to determine qualifications.</p> <ul> <li>Minimum of five years successful experience in which the education of and/or intervention assistance for "at risk" and/or "behaviorally challenged" students was an important responsibility for the position </li><li>Expert knowledge of function-based intervention planning for developing behavior change strategies that focuses on reducing problem behavior and increasing more appropriate behavior </li><li>Expert knowledge of techniques needed to successfully complete effective Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA), function -based interventions, and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP) </li><li>Exceptional knowledge in the use of assessment and assessment data to inform instruction and prescribe work plans for individual students </li><li>Expert knowledge in research based instructional strategies and ability to implement them effectively </li><li>Demonstrate ability to plan and evaluate strategies for improving instruction </li><li>Ascribes to the philosophy that all children can succeed and demonstrates the commitment to do what is necessary to make this a reality </li><li>Extensive experience working with children with complex behavioral needs, including but not limited to, children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Emotional Impairments, and Intensive Needs due to other factors including mental health and trauma </li><li>Proficiency in completing Functional Behavioral Assessments and developing, implementing and evaluating the effectiveness of corresponding Behavior Intervention Plans </li><li>Professional Licensure or certification related to mental health, behavioral interventions, and/or crisis intervention </li><li>Experience in training/collaborating with staff on behavioral interventions, functional behavioral thinking and trauma informed care </li><li>A passionate commitment to improving learning for all students. </li><li>Demonstrated positive interpersonal relationships </li><li>Evidence of ability to establish positive working relationships with all stakeholders. </li><li>Superior verbal and written communication skills </li></ul> <p>ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP:</p> <p>The Behavior Intervention Specialist is assigned and responsible to the Department of Student Services, which has responsibility for the system-wide program for students with disabilities.</p> <p>MAJOR FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:</p> <ul> <li>Exhibits a commitment to the Garfield community School Mission and Vision </li><li>Develops colleague's capacity to conduct Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs) by developing awareness of their importance, the research basis related to their role in developing effective Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), the many different avenues of data gathering, and how to develop hypotheses regarding the function of target (problematic) behaviors </li><li>Develops colleague's implementation of FBAs with fidelity by utilizing accountability systems that identify action steps/ responsibilities of team members resulting in an FBA document that specifically states the data-based hypothesis for the function of each student's target (problematic) behaviors that will become a key component of the BIP </li><li>Consults with the Garfield Community School Principal, school social workers, school psychologists, teacher-ASD/consultants, teachers, and other building team supports for academic, behavioral, socio-emotional, mental health related questions and concerns </li><li>Facilitates parent involvement /participation in special education and other problem-solving meetings including Home - School planning with parents and school teams </li><li>Assists and/or develop home-school communication to facilitate problem solving and/or to mitigates crisis situations </li><li>Coordinates and conducts and help the school community provide parent education regarding educational, behavioral and/or socio-emotional needs of students </li><li>Attends if requested and in other ways support administrators, school teams, and/or individual professionals for REED, MET, IEPT, MDR, and IAES meetings </li><li>Consults and/or contributes to the development of interventions for classrooms, selected students and/or individual students including engagement strategies, accommodations, assistive technology, adjustment for instructional level, and motivation plans </li><li>Maintains an outreach to community resources </li><li>Supports students in the school setting as well as within the community with an emphasis on behavior prevention </li><li>Serves as an integral member of the Garfield Crisis Team </li><li>Facilitates Educational Planning Team Meetings on a weekly basis in conjunction with other professionals </li><li>Participates on the Garfield Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports Steering Committee </li><li>Executes other duties and assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the Principal </li></ul> <p>CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:</p> <p>The work year, salary, and fringe benefits will be consistent with the current agreement between the Board of Education and the Livonia Education Association.
