<p>The Boca Raton Public Library empowers our community to discover, connect, and create through quality collections and resources, information assistance, educational programs, and lifelong learning opportunities. The Boca Raton Library has four service centers - the Spanish River Library, the Downtown Library, Mobile Library Services, and the Digital Library.</p> <p>Under the direction of Library Assistant II, this part-time Library Page position is responsible for removing, replacing, or affixing labels to pockets, cards, and spines and work necessary to get materials shelf-ready as well as being responsible for the general organization of library materials, including shelving and assessing condition, so that library users can find and enjoy popular and engaging books, media, games, and other library materials.</p> <ul> <li>Sorts and shelves books and other library materials, and maintains library materials shelves in proper alphabetical, numerical or chronological order </li><li>Locates books and other library materials on shelves and balances materials between locations. </li><li>Assesses the condition of library materials, weeds out-of-date or damaged materials, and performs light cleaning or repairs. </li><li>Interacts helpfully with patrons to assist them in locating library materials and facilities. Answers directional or basic procedural inquiries. </li><li>Assists with library-wide events, offers reading recommendations, and maintains displays. </li><li>Enforces the Rules of Conduct, library policies, and maintains order at the libraries. </li><li>Does related work as required. </li></ul> <p>Knowledge of:</p> <ul> <li>Library principles, methods, materials, and practices. </li><li>Reader interests, books, and authors. </li><li>The objectives of a public library. </li></ul> <p>Skilled in:</p> <ul> <li>Reading and alphabetizing accurately to place materials in proper order. </li><li>Evaluating tasks and priorities to complete work accurately and efficiently. </li><li>Basic skills in the use of email, cell phones, computers, workplace software applications such as Outlook, and peripheral devices such as printers. </li></ul> <p>Ability to:</p> <ul> <li>Understand how the library is organized, including sections, shelves, aisles and other library spaces. </li><li>Accurately sort and file materials alphabetically, numerically, and chronologically. </li><li>Accurately shelve using the Dewey Decimal System and other organizational methods. </li><li>Carefully handle library materials, using appropriate tools, containers and book carts. </li><li>Assist patrons to locate materials and refer patrons to other appropriate assistance in the library. </li><li>Establish and maintain working relationships with patrons, partners and co-workers. </li><li>Serve the public and interact with co-workers with honesty and integrity. </li><li>Understand, follow, and explain policies and procedures, and submit forms. </li><li>Express ideas effectively, both verbally and in writing. </li><li>Perform basic mathematical calculations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. </li><li>Ability to work mornings, days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events as necessary. </li><li>Bend, stoop, twist, and reach to shelve or move a variety of library materials. </li><li>16 years of age. </li><li>Completed a minimum of two years of High School. </li></ul> <p>PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <ul> <li>Six (6) months of experience working with the public. </li><li>High School diploma or GED Equivalent </li><li>Experience working in a public service setting assisting customers, restocking inventory, or maintaining displays as an employee or a volunteer. </li></ul> <p>POST OFFER PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING REQUIREMENTS:</p> <p>Final offer and employment are contingent upon successful completion of the environmental conditions and physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.</p> <ul> <li>Occasionally remains in a stationary position, either standing or sitting for prolonged periods. </li><li>Occasionally communicates with others to exchange information. </li><li>Occasionally operates a computer and other equipment requiring manual dexterity or fine motor skills. </li><li>Occasionally pushes/pulls objects up to 150 pounds using a cart. </li><li>Occasionally works in a normal office environment with few physical discomforts. </li><li>Occasionally works in areas that are somewhat uncomfortable due to drafts, noise, or temperature variations. </li><li>Occasionally works with equipment or performs procedures where carelessness could result in minor cuts, bruises, or muscle pulls. </li><li>Continuously moves self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments, including tight and confined spaces. </li><li>Continuously moves about within the immediate work area to accomplish tasks. </li><li>Continuously adjusts or moves objects up to 20 pounds in all directions. </li><li>Continuously repeats motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. </li><li>Continuously assesses the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned. </li><li>Continuously observes details accurately and identifies variances. </li><li>Continuously lifts/carries objects up to 40 pounds. </li><li>Continuously required to maintain regular in-office attendance, with no remote work assignments allowed. </li></ul> <p>Essential Employee Designation</p> <p>When normal operations of City departments are suspended or interrupted due to a declaration that a state of emergency exists, any employee may be deemed essential by the City. For the preparation and/or continuation of emergency operations or for special work detail, employees deemed necessary shall be required to work. </p>
