<p>The mission of NIU Athletics is to enhance the University, community and region through service and engagement while developing champions in the classroom, in competition and in life. With long standing traditions and core values centered on family, NIU Athletics is home to 17 NCAA Division I sport programs. Northern Illinois University, chartered in 1895, is a comprehensive teaching and research institution with over 15,000 currently enrolled students and houses seven (7) degree-granting colleges-Business, Education, Engineering and Engineering Technology, Health and Human Sciences, Law, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Visual and Performing Arts. Centrally located in DeKalb, Northern Illinois University is 30 miles west of Aurora, 65 miles west of Chicago, 36 miles west of Naperville, and 45 miles southeast of Rockford.</p> <p>Position Summary</p> <p>Responsible for the organization, management, administration, and coaching of a Division I women's basketball program, student-athletes and staff, in addition to fulfilling other department responsibilities.</p> <p>Essential Duties and Responsibilities</p> <p>Academics - 30%</p> <ul> <li>Oversee, in conjunction with Student Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS), the total academic progress of the student-athletes on the women's basketball team. </li><li>Coaching/teaching current student athletes; the expectation for coaches is to serve as a mentor, advocate, and teacher of student athletes. </li><li>Provide an overall positive educational environment for student-athletes conducive to learning, athletic development, social growth, and preparing them for life beyond college. </li><li>In conjunction with the Student Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS) department monitor academic progress and academic status of student-athletes, implementing corrective action plans through appropriate staff, if needed. </li></ul> <p>Administrative - 30%</p> <ul> <li>Preparation and conduct of all team-related activities including teaching/coaching skill instruction, sport strategy and competitive opportunities. </li><li>Responsible for scheduling in-season and off-season competitions. </li><li>Implement and supervise the recruitment strategy to attract top level, Division I prospects including identification, assessment, campus visits, and enrollment. </li><li>Perform team-related administrative duties such as budget management, scheduling, and travel arrangements. </li></ul> <p>Supervisory - 30%</p> <ul> <li>Responsible for the complete operation of an NCAA Division I program, including staff selection/hiring of all assistant coaches, volunteers and the supervision thereof and annual evaluations of those employees. </li><li>Monitor and maintain the discipline and conduct of student-athletes to support the image and reputation of the department and university. </li><li>Responsible for the development, safety and conduct of the student-athletes within specific sport program. </li><li>Supervise the recruitment strategy to attract top-level Division I prospects, including identification, assessment, campus visits, and implementation of campus resources. </li></ul> <p>Public Relations & Fundraising - 10%</p> <ul> <li>Perform both direct and indirect public relations functions including promotion, fundraising, community instruction through camps and/or clinics. </li><li>Cash handling responsibilities- $5,000-$10,000 annually. </li><li>When practical under the circumstances, intercollegiate athletic staff is encouraged to voluntarily attend all athletic events to promote audience participation and support for NIU team efforts. </li><li>Perform other related duties as department needs upon request. </li></ul> <p>Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)</p> <p>N/A</p> <p>Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) (Civil Service)</p> <p>N/A</p> <p>Specialty Factors (Civil Service)</p> <p>N/A</p> <p>Preferred Qualifications (Civil Service)</p> <p>N/A</p> <p>Minimum Required Qualifications (SPS)</p> <ul> <li>Bachelor's Degree </li><li>Minimum of three (3) years of coaching experience in any sport. </li><li>Demonstrated successful coaching experience in basketball. </li><li>Minimum three (3) years of successful recruiting of quality student-athletes within the Midwest region. </li></ul> <p>Additional Requirements (SPS)</p> <ul> <li>Have a thorough knowledge of NCAA, conference, and institutional policies and conduct program within those regulations. </li><li>As a staff member within the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, you are responsible for knowledge of and compliance with National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) regulations, both those general in nature and those which apply directly to your position's responsibilities. Strict adherence to all applicable governing policies, procedures, and regulations of the NCAA is required and is a condition of your employment. </li><li>Ability to communicate with and relate well to student-athletes, high school/club coaches and department support staff. </li><li>Ability to effectively communicate through oral, written, and electronic forms. </li><li>Strong organizational skills, with the ability to perform as a self-starter and handle communications in a timely, accurate, and confidential manner. </li><li>Ability to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. </li><li>Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively and respectfully with a diverse range of individuals and groups. </li><li>Knowledge of budgetary procedures and attention to detail. </li><li>Proven ability to professionally execute all essential functions of the position with tact and diplomacy. </li><li>Advanced knowledge in coaching methodology, program design and development, strategic planning, and budgeting. </li></ul> <p>Preferred Qualifications (SPS)</p> <ul> <li>Master's degree. </li><li>Competitive experience in basketball on the university or college level. </li><li>Coaching experience at the Division I college level. </li></ul> <p>Physical demands/requirements</p> <ul> <li>Sitting, standing, running, lifting up to 50lbs. </li></ul>
