<p>Title</p> <p>Shelter Veterinarian PT</p> <p>Open Date 2/18/2025 Full-Time/Part-Time Part-Time Exempt/Non-Exempt Non-Exempt Bargaining / Non-Bargaining Non-Bargaining Division Community Investment Location Neighborhoods/South Bend Animal Resource Center (SBARC) Reports To Shelter Manager Schedule 30 hours a week, days will be set dependent on offer Pay Rate $44.80-$67.30/per hour Description</p> <p>PAY: $44.80 - $67.30 per hour</p> <p>POSITION SUMMARY:</p> <p>The South Bend Animal Resource Center (SBARC) is responsible for animal welfare services in the City of South</p> <p>Bend. SBARC is the enforcement authority for animal and public safety welfare, an animal shelter facility, and a</p> <p>resource to ensure the proper care of the animals in our community. The part-time Shelter Veterinarian will be</p> <p>responsible for ensuring high-quality medical care for the animals in SBARC's care as well as a resource for the</p> <p>community through organized opportunities.</p> <p>The Shelter Veterinarian will work with the Shelter Manager to ensure that all animals in the care of SBARC have</p> <p>proper medical treatment, complete procedures to ensure compliance with the city code such as administering</p> <p>vaccinations and completing spay/neuter procedures, and provide opportunities to offer no or low-cost treatments</p> <p>to benefit our communities' pets.</p> <p>This is a part-time position for veterinarian service provision for 20-30 hours per week. There is an opportunity for</p> <p>flexibility of when work is performed and the final schedule will be determined in consultation with the selected</p> <p>candidate. Some nights, weekends, and/or holidays may be required, as agreed upon.</p> <p>As a leader and employee of the City of South Bend, you are called upon to serve in a manner that supports Our</p> <p>Core Values: Excellence, Accountability, Innovation, Inclusion, and Empowerment as you carry out our primary</p> <p>employee expectations: Champion Values & Organizational Pride, Champion Operational Excellence, Make Sound</p> <p>Decisions, Embrace Coaching and Accountability, Communicate with Excellence, Value Diverse People and</p> <p>Perspectives, Embrace Personal Development, Exhibit a Positive Attitude and Own Your Health, Wellness &</p> <p>Safety.</p> <p>SUPERVISION EXERCISED:</p> <p>Supervision of staff assisting with surgeries and/or exams during the procedure, as needed.</p> <p>ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:</p> <ul> <li>Diagnose, treat, triage, examine, and provide routine shelter medicine to shelter animals. </li><li>Assist in the design and implementation of medical and general care protocols. </li><li>Ensure proper documentation of animals, including condition and the provided treatment in accordance </li></ul> <p>with shelter policy.</p> <ul> <li>Consult and advise on health and related aspects of care for animals at SBARC, including but not limited </li></ul> <p>to, vaccinations, administration of medication, testing, medical evaluations, humane health care,</p> <p>euthanasia, and disease prevention in the shelter.</p> <ul> <li>Lead weekly (at a minimum) medical rounds and organize treatment plans for shelter animals. </li><li>Perform surgical procedures on shelter animals, as needed (for example, spay/neuter, hernia repair, tumor </li></ul> <p>removals, and ocular procedures).</p> <ul> <li>Administer medications and other treatments as identified in treatment plans. </li><li>Work with SBARC team to provide outstanding patient care to publicly owned and shelter animals, </li></ul> <p>including communicating and collaborating with staff during procedures and examinations.</p> <ul> <li>Monitor all animals' condition and provide care directly, or through guidance to other staff, following </li></ul> <p>procedures and/or when injured or ill.</p> <ul> <li>Provide training, oversight, mentoring, and consultation for technical and support staff, interns, and/or </li></ul> <p>volunteers as appropriate.</p> <ul> <li>Maintain pharmacy and medical inventory (including controlled substances) by performing regular audits </li></ul> <p>and coordinating supply orders, as needed.</p> <ul> <li>Maintain and reconcile medicine logs, including controlled drug log in accordance of DEA guidelines, and </li></ul> <p>submitting reports within due dates.</p> <ul> <li>Maintains clean and sanitary equipment. </li><li>Ensures animals have appropriate after-care following procedures, including assisting with cleaning </li></ul> <p>kennels and cages to the appropriate standards, as needed.</p> <ul> <li>Handles and treats all species of animals in a humane manner. </li><li>Enforces city, state, and federal laws regarding animal care and control. </li><li>Work with SBARC staff to ensure operation of the shelter runs smoothly by ensuring animals are ready </li></ul> <p>for transfer, adoption, and/or release to owner.</p> <ul> <li>Participate in the development and implementation of programming and/or events that support the health </li></ul> <p>of animals in the community.</p> <ul> <li>Other duties assigned by the Shelter Manager </li></ul> <p>NON-ESSENTIAL/MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:</p> <ul> <li>Assumes additional responsibilities as directed and as they relate to the overall function of SBARC. </li></ul> <p>EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <p>To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty in a satisfactory</p> <p>manner. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.</p> <p>Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.</p> <ul> <li>Graduation from an accredited college with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree is required. </li><li>Indiana State license to practice Veterinary Medicine is required. </li><li>Two or more years' experience practicing Veterinary Medicine in a veterinary clinic, hospital, and/or animal shelter or control facility desired. </li><li>Experience in high volume spay/neuter clinic and/or post graduate surgical training preferred. </li><li>Experience in emergency medicine and veterinary forensics a plus. </li><li>Any equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered </li></ul> <p>KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:</p> <ul> <li>Knowledge of animal care and control. </li><li>Team player with the ability to work in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment. </li><li>Experience that demonstrates initiative, problem diagnosis, critical thinking, and proactive problem-solving skills. </li><li>Efficient use of computer hardware and software to maintain neat and accurate record. </li><li>Interpersonal communication skills to effectively communicate instructions, procedures, and processes to </li></ul> <p>team members, and to manage a team and delegate responsibilities, tasks and assignments as appropriate.</p> <ul> <li>Experience maintaining a strong degree of confidentiality, integrity, and judgment. </li><li>Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with a diverse range of audiences and varying </li></ul> <p>settings.</p> <ul> <li>Ability to handle stressful and/or difficult situations as presented by visitors, staff and/or volunteers. </li><li>Self-motivation and the ability to motivate others. </li><li>The ability to be a supportive and collaborative team player. </li><li>Candidate must promote and support the overall vision and strategic plan for the shelter. </li><li>Ability to attend evening and weekend events or meetings when necessary. </li><li>Ability to for occasional travel to alternative locations where events, meetings, or other SBARC related activites may occur. </li></ul> <p>CERTIFICATES, LICENSE, REGISTRATION:</p> <ul> <li>Indiana State license to practice Veterinary Medicine required. </li><li>DEA Certification and CSR- or ability to obtain. </li><li>Valid Driver's license required. </li></ul> <p>EQUIPMENT:</p> <p>Medical equipment and materials, medications, phone, personal computer, copy machine, fax machine, and cleaning tools.</p> <p>PHYSICAL DEMANDS:</p> <p>The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully</p> <p>perform the essential functions of this job.
