<p>ENGLISH - Assistant or Associate Professor of English</p> <p>Job Classification</p> <p>Position summary</p> <p>The Andrews University Department of English seeks a full-time, tenure-track generalist in English at the Assistant or Associate level, with responsibilities teaching across its literature and writing emphases. A specialization in American literature, nineteenth-century literature, literary theory, English education, or creative writing is preferred. The faculty load is 24 semester hours per academic year, consisting of teaching college writing, general education courses, and classes for the major. The position will begin on July 1, 2025. Review of applications will begin immediately.</p> <p>Qualifications summary</p> <ul> <li> <p>A Ph.D. (ABD may apply)</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to contribute to the department's literature and writing curriculum</p> </li><li> <p>Excellent interpersonal and communication skills</p> </li><li> <p>Experience with diverse learners, including students from various backgrounds and achievement levels</p> </li><li> <p>A presentation/publication record signaling a commitment to scholarship</p> </li><li> <p>Interest in undergraduate research mentorship</p> </li><li> <p>Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues</p> </li></ul> <p>Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.</p> <p>Duties and responsibilities</p> <ul> <li> <p>Carry a load of 24 semester credits (teaching and/or other responsibilities)</p> </li><li> <p>Prepare and post syllabi in a timely manner</p> </li><li> <p>Maintain an active course management site</p> </li><li> <p>Order textbooks in a timely manner</p> </li><li> <p>Post and keep regular office hours</p> </li><li> <p>Meet class appointments punctually as scheduled</p> </li><li> <p>Hold regular, scheduled conferences with students as outlined in syllabus</p> </li><li> <p>Evaluate and return student work within a reasonable timeframe</p> </li><li> <p>Keep detailed and consistent records of student work</p> </li><li> <p>Compute and submit midterm and final grades in a timely manner</p> </li><li> <p>Maintain an active scholarship agenda</p> </li><li> <p>Mentor undergraduate research as needed and requested</p> </li><li> <p>Participate in departmental assessment as needed and requested</p> </li><li> <p>Attend announced/scheduled departmental meetings</p> </li><li> <p>Render committee service</p> </li><li> <p>Attend announced/scheduled college and university faculty meetings</p> </li><li> <p>Be willing to serve as the faculty sponsor for Nu Sigma, the local chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the English honor society</p> </li></ul> <p>Supervisory responsibilities</p> <p>May supervise a student worker in office work, grading, and related tasks</p> <p>Qualifications</p> <ul> <li> <p>A PhD in English, literature, writing studies or related field from a regionally accredited institution</p> </li><li> <p>Evidence of effective teaching, including general education writing courses</p> </li><li> <p>Evidence of ability to conduct research, instruct general students in information literacy, and supervise research in English studies for majors and minors</p> </li></ul> <p>Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.</p> <p>Technical competencies</p> <ul> <li> <p>Willingness to learn and use LearningHub (Andrews University's course management system)</p> </li><li> <p>Basic knowledge of classroom technology</p> </li></ul> <p>Interpersonal interactions</p> <ul> <li> <p>Will conduct classes and interact with students in a culturally diverse environment</p> </li><li> <p>Will promote and model civility and politeness in all interactions with students and colleagues</p> </li><li> <p>Will direct classroom discussions and other interactions, such as small groups, presentations, workshops, peer reviews, and other similar activities</p> </li><li> <p>Will meet one-on-one with students to review their work and offer evaluation, direction, and suggestions for revisions of written work</p> </li><li> <p>Will work with individual students in sometimes sensitive situations to accommodate disabilities and other challenges, all within FERPA regulations</p> </li><li> <p>Will foster collegial relationships with both within the department and across campus</p> </li></ul> <p>Physical demands</p> <p>Standing in the classroom, potentially for up to 75 minutes</p> <p>Work environment</p> <p>Normal classroom environment and will have own office in a sometimes busy, lively departmental environment</p>
