<p>Summary:</p> <p>Under general supervision of the Chief Engineer-Power Plant the Lead Power Plant Engineer provides assistance in supervising planning inspecting monitoring scheduling and coordinating daily power plant activities. Controls monitors and repairs boilers turbines generators and auxiliary power generating plant equipment. As delegated schedules the repair and maintenance of high-pressure steam boiler turbo-generator medical waste incinerators and ancillary equipment that produces energy for end users. Assumes supervisory responsibility and authority in the absence of Chief Engineer Power Plant.</p> <p>Responsibilities:</p> <p>Regularly schedules and assigns work to others. Provides technical assistance as required and conducts a follow-up inspection on all work assignments. Participates in the interviewing and selection process. Assesses performance and recommends salary adjustments where appropriate. Counsels employees and recommends corrective action up to and including termination.</p> <p>Participates in the development of Facilities Management Power Plant policies and procedures. Ensures subordinates understand and comply with department and hospital policies and procedures.</p> <p>Daily inspects and checks the condition of the power plant machinery and equipment.</p> <p>Monitors primary switch-gear and breaker controls and regulates the amount of electricity produced by each hospital generator in conjunction with the electricity received from the utility company.</p> <p>Maintains close surveillance of bearing temperatures of generator shafts oil and steam pressures and turbo generator temperatures and related valves. Identifies problems and makes necessary adjustments to bring temperature and readings within normal ranges.</p> <p>Checks and lubricates pumps condensers and air ejectors; check joints for leaks and make repairs.</p> <p>Anticipates power needs such as those caused by changes in the weather or power supplied by the utility company and starts or stops generator(s) to bring energy production into balance with hospital needs.</p> <p>Records relevant events and facts concerning power plant operations and maintenance. Takes and records gauge and meter readings including the amount of electricity produced by each generator and power received from the utility company.</p> <p>Maintains and monitors air conditioning tower water levels and operating conditions adds chemicals to monitor harmful bacteria and viruses conditions and to prevent equipment corrosion.</p> <p>Maintains machinery history logs and records such as time worked on projects and employee attendance.</p> <p>Performs duties of subordinate personnel and performs other duties as assigned.</p> <p>Other information:</p> <p>BASIC KNOWLEDGE:</p> <p>Minimum of two years Associates Degree or equivalent in mechanical electrical or related discipline.</p> <p>Completion of two years training in boiler operations and turbo-generator operations generally acquired from a technical school or military service.</p> <p>Requires Stationary Operating Engineer's License from the City of Providence.</p> <p>Supervisory skills to effectively direct the work of others.</p> <p>Analytical ability to plan schedule and coordinate work projects and to troubleshoot problems.</p> <p>Knowledge of the thermodynamics of steam the principals of generators and electricity.</p> <p>Knowledge of relevant code requirements and regulations.</p> <p>Working knowledge of a design application (AutoCAD) system preferred.</p> <p>EXPERIENCE:</p> <p>Minimum of five years Power Plant operation experience.</p> <p>Works in areas exposed to electrical heating and cooling equipment where there is exposure to noise heat asbestos caustic chemicals etc. and possibility medical waste.</p> <p>Hazards and injuries are minimized by adherence to established safety precautions.</p> <p>Physical ability to climb ladders carry tools and move and lift equipment chemical containers and other materials.</p> <p>Brown University Health is an Equal Opportunity employer.
