Pay rates are based on education, skill, experience level and internal equity. Through our 20 locations, online, and through targeted outreach, we deliver exceptional library services and programs with a mission to create a community of readers and empower individuals with free access to information and the universe of ideas.</p> <p>Location:</p> <p>Library Administration Center - 510 Stitt Road, Charlotte, NC 28213</p> <p>Position Summary:</p> <p>The Assistant Director for Outreach leads the strategy, design, and delivery of Charlotte Mecklenburg Library's programs beyond the traditional library setting, ensuring all residents-wherever they are-have access to engaging, relevant, and impactful library experiences. This role drives the vision for outreach-based programming, aligning offerings with community needs, emerging trends, and the Library's mission to inspire and enrich lives.</p> <p>As a senior leader, the Assistant Director for Outreach develops systemwide program priorities for underserved and geographically diverse communities, coordinates with branches and departments to ensure cohesive delivery, and evaluates outcomes to inform future initiatives. This includes fostering partnerships with schools, community organizations, and local agencies to expand reach, remove barriers, and bring library services to where they are most needed.</p> <p>By guiding program design, implementation, and evaluation across Mecklenburg County, the Assistant Director for Outreach ensures that Outreach Services delivers high-quality learning opportunities, cultural experiences, and resources that reflect all individuals across the community. This position empowers staff to innovate, adapt, and collaborate in building a robust portfolio of programs that connect people to ideas, information, and each other-strengthening the Library's presence as a trusted and essential community partner.</p> <p>Essential Functions:</p> <p>Provide strategic leadership for Charlotte Mecklenburg Library's Outreach Department, ensuring alignment with the Library's mission, vision, and systemwide goals.</p> <p>Direct the development, implementation, and evaluation of outreach programs and policies across all locations, using community and demographic data to guide priorities and measure impact.</p> <p>Lead the creation and delivery of innovative programs and services for residents who cannot use the Library in traditional ways, incorporating emerging technologies and best practices.</p> <p>Establish clear departmental goals, measure progress, and adapt strategies based on performance data, community needs, and professional trends.</p> <p>Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and professional growth through coaching, mentoring, and comprehensive staff training.</p> <p>Manage departmental operations, including budget planning and resource allocation, staffing, scheduling, and performance management.</p> <p>Serve as a member of the Library Services team, acting as a liaison between Outreach and other departments, branches, and systemwide initiatives.</p> <p>Represent the Library in professional, civic, and community settings, cultivating partnerships that expand program reach and relevance.</p> <p>Ensure operational excellence through continuous improvement of processes, policies, and service delivery standards.</p> <p>Promote and model exceptional customer service, conflict resolution, and community engagement.</p> <p>Minimum Qualifications:</p> <p>Minimum of five years of professional experience in leading community programs</p> <p>Minimum of three years of supervisory experience</p> <p>Education:</p> <p>Bachelor's degree in related field</p> <p>Licenses and Certifications:</p> <p>Valid North Carolina or South Carolina license</p> <p>Ability to obtain and maintain a County Operator Permit</p> <p>Preferred Qualifications:</p> <p>Bilingual - Spanish language preferred</p> <p>Seven or more years supervisory experience</p> <p>Ten or more years professional experience in leading community programs</p> <p>Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:</p> <p>Knowledge of and experience with community organizing and partnership</p> <p>Knowledge of data-driven decision-making, particularly in areas of community and demographic data</p> <p>Knowledge of and experience in Library programming, particularly in developing and implementing new service offerings in high-need communities</p> <p>Skills:</p> <p>Excellent verbal, grammatical and written communication skills</p> <p>Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills</p> <p>Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail</p> <p>Excellent time management skills with attention to detail</p> <p>Abilities:</p> <p>Building Partnerships: Identifying opportunities and taking action to build strategic relationships between one's area and other areas, teams, departments, community groups or organizations to help achieve business goals</p> <p>Communication: Clearly conveying information and ideas through a variety of media to individuals or groups in a manner that engages the audience and helps them understand and retain the information provided</p> <p>Decision Making: Identifying and understanding issues, problems and opportunities; comparing data from different sources to draw conclusions; using effective approaches for choosing a course of action or developing appropriate solutions; taking action that is consistent with available facts, constraints, and probable consequence</p> <p>Information Monitoring: Setting up ongoing procedures to collect and review information needed to manage an organization or ongoing activities within it</p> <p>Technical/professional Knowledge and Skills: Having achieved a satisfactory level of technical and professional skill or knowledge in position-related areas; keeping up with current developments and trends in areas of expertise</p> <p>Work Standards: Setting high standards of performance for self and others; assuming responsibility and accountability for successfully completing assignments or tasks;
