<p>Department:</p> <p>Special Education</p> <p>Job Title:</p> <p>Assistant Department Head for Special Education</p> <p>FLSA Status:</p> <p>(Exempt/Non-exempt)</p> <p>Exempt; Unit B</p> <p>Reports to:</p> <p>Department Head</p> <p>GENERAL DESCRIPTION (1-3 LINES DESCRIBING ROLE):</p> <p>The Assistant Department Head provides special education leadership, including overall insight of staff and programming at the high school.</p> <p>QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <p>REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <ul> <li>Master's Degree or higher in education administration, special education or related field </li><li>Massachusetts DESE licensure as an Administrator and Special Educator </li><li>Three or more years of experience as an administrator </li><li>Demonstrated knowledge of special education regulations </li><li>Thorough understanding of achievement assessments and ability to administer and/or interpret them </li><li>Ability to effectively supervise, evaluate, coach and mentor teachers, aides, counselors and specialists </li><li>Ability to handle multitude of varying and complex issues </li><li>Excellent oral and written communication skills </li><li>Ability to use technology effectively </li><li>Demonstrated organizational skills </li></ul> <p>DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:</p> <ul> <li>Experience supervising and/or working with special education staff </li><li>Experience working in a large school district </li><li>Innovative approach to programming </li></ul> <p>ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES (NOT LIMITED TO):</p> <ul> <li>Organize, supervise and evaluate special education staff members </li><li>Supervise the development of individual education programs for special education students </li><li>Attend special education meetings </li><li>Assist the department head in the handing of day-to-day problems that arise within the department </li><li>Assist in scheduling special education supports </li><li>Assist in scheduling special education meetings </li><li>Monitor and provide appropriate consultation services for the department </li><li>Other duties as needed </li></ul> <p>WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:</p> <p>Work Environment:</p> <p>Majority of work is performed in a school/classroom environment. The noise level in the environment is usually moderate.</p> <p>Physical Requirements:</p> <p>While performing the duties of this job, the teacher is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear. The teacher is regularly required to bend, stoop, crouch and/or kneel. The teacher is occasionally required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Must have sufficient mobility to navigate within a large school building.</p> <p>The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
